A system and method for coating glass gobs (30) with a liquid-based lubricating dispersion during their drop to blank glass container molds (34) which provides sufficient lubrication to the glass container molds without requiring swabbing of the glass container molds. The lubricating dispersion is sprayed onto at least some of the glass gobs as they fall from the gob supply system (32) through an enclosure (50) prior to their distribution by the gob distribution system (42) into blank molds (34). The lubricating dispersion coats the falling glass gobs to lubricate the glass gobs as well as the molds.

A burner for depositing carbon soot on a glassware mold includes a burner nozzle having an annular array of individual gas outlet ports, a fuel passage within the nozzle connected to a first plurality of the outlet ports and an oxidant passage in the nozzle connected to a second plurality of the outlet ports. The first plurality of outlet ports individually alternate with the second plurality of outlet ports around the annular array such that the array presents alternate fuel and oxidant outlet ports around the array. An ignition electrode is disposed on the burner nozzle within the annular array of outlet ports for igniting fuel and oxidant emerging from the outlet ports. The ignition electrode preferably is in the form of an elongated ignition electrode rod telescopically surrounded by an insulator and centered on the burner nozzle within the annular array of outlet ports, and a ground electrode telescopically surrounding the insulator. The ground electrode preferably is part of the burner nozzle and is electrically connected to a burner mounting block on which the burner nozzle is mounted.

A gob of molten glass from a gob delivery system is introduced into a blank mold of a glass container forming machine of the individual section type by way loading funnel immediately upstream of an opening into the blank mold. The loading funnel has an upper annular gathering portion in the shape of an inverted frustum of a cone and a cylindrical lower shaping and orienting section. The internal diameter of the shaping and orienting section is somewhat less than the outer diameter of a gob passing therethrough, to thereby contact the gob in a substantially circumferential pattern, and the shaping and orienting section has a length that is sufficient to precisely align the longitudinal central axis of the gob with a longitudinal central axis of the blank mold, to thereby eliminate or substantially eliminate the need to swab the interior of the blank mold with a mold dopant composition.

A method for manufacturing a glass container includes the steps of (a) providing a plunger (1) coated with a ceramic coating (3) or a sprayed metal coating (2) of self-fluxing alloy or both coatings on at least one portion of a surface of the plunger and (b) forming a lubrication carbon layer on surfaces of molds including a blank mold and a neck ring by periodically injecting (14) flames of at least one kind of gaseous hydrocarbon having a carbon to hydrogen ratio more than 0.75. The coating of the plunger (1) prevents the plunger from being oxidized so that flaking of an oxidized layer which will be accompanied by generation of defects at an inside surface of a glass container does not occur. Due to the carbon layer formed through flame injection of hydrocarbons, oiling of the molds is unnecessary and generation of bubbles in the oil film does not occur. This method not only increases the impact strength of a glass container but also increases the uniformity of impact strength.
