A process is described for obtaining high-purity 1-butene starting from C 4 hydrocarbon mixtures containing isobutene, n-butane, isobutane, 1, 3 -butadiene, 1-butene, 2- butenes and also optionally C 3 and C 5 hydrocarbons, comprising the following stages: conversion of isobutene effected in a double stage, wherein each stage consists of one or more reactors followed by a distillation column for the recovery of the reaction product; recovery of the excess alcohol; recovery of 1-butene using at least two distillation columns; characterised in that it also uses a further conversion stage, consisting of one or more reactors in series, for completing the isobutene removal.

Described is an apparatus for, and a method of, recovering linear butenes from a mixed feed comprising providing a first mixed feed comprising linear butenes and isobutene; contacting the first mixed feed with an oligomerization catalyst such as an MWW family zeolite in a first oligomerization reactor to produce a second mixed feed comprising the linear butenes, C 8 olefins and higher oligomers, and a reduced amount of isobutene relative to the first mixed feed; and separating the second mixed feed to produce a first effluent of first purified linear butenes, and a second effluent of C 8 olefins and higher oligomers. The oligomerization reactor may be a converted isobutene-to-methyl-t-butylether reactor.

Vinylidene olefin is removed from an olefin mixture containing 1 to 55 mole percent vinylidene olefin, 0 to 10 mole percent internal olefin, and the balance vinyl olefin, by:
(A) reacting the olefin mixture in the presence of a BF₃-water and/or active proton-containing organic promoter catalyst system so as to selectively dimerize said vinylidene olefin, and (B) separating said vinyl olefin and internal olefin from the dimerized vinylidene olefin to produce an olefin product having a reduced vinylidene olefin content compared to said olefin mixture.

A process by which aromatic hydrocarbons containing difficultly distillation-separable impurities such as sulfur compounds and/or nitrogen compounds can be highly purified. This process is characterized by reacting a crude aromatic hydrocarbon either with a formaldehyde or with a formaldehyde and a phenol in the presence of an acid catalyst to form oligomers, subjecting the obtained reaction mixture to distillation or evaporation to thereby separate unreacted aromatic hydrocarbon from the oligomers, and subjecting the aromatic hydrocarbon thus separated to crystallization or washing with an organic solvent. When the aromatic hydrocarbon is naphthalene, the process gives pure naphthalene which has a purity of 99.9999 wt% or above and is lowly odorous and easy to perfume, and this high-purity naphthalene is useful in the production of excellently fragrant insect repellents.
