Disclosed herein is a polymerization process involving the steps of generating monomer micro-volumes in a microfluidic device, feeding the monomer micro-volumes through the at least one first microfluidic channel towards a monomer feed point at which the monomer micro-volumes enter into or onto a volume of a non-aqueous liquid and form aqueous monomer droplets, allowing the aqueous monomer droplets to flow towards a polymer bead discharge point, initiating polymerisation of the aqueous monomer droplets to form polymerising beads, removing a suspension of the polymer beads in the non-aqueous liquid from the vessel at the polymer bead discharge point, and recovering water soluble or water swellable polymer beads from the suspension. The present disclosure also includes an apparatus for performing the polymerization process and water soluble or water swellable polymer beads obtained by the polymerization process.

The present invention provides novel hydrolytically decomposable ionic copolymers. These ionic copolymers are made up of a cyclic ketene acetal A, an anionic or cationic methacrylic acid derivative B selected from 2-methyl-methacrylate, [2-(2-methyl-1-methylen-allyloxy)-ethane sulfonate, [2-(2-methyl-1-methylen-allyloxy)ethyl]-phosphonate or a quaternary amine of N,N-dimethylaminoethylmethacrylic acid (DMAEMA) and optionally a neutral methacrylic acid derivative C. According to the invention, hydrolytically decomposable ionic copolymers are produced by polymerizing the components A, B and C in the presence of a radical starter under a protective gas atmosphere, followed by purification. All copolymers according to the invention are hydrolytically decomposable. Copolymers containing a maximum of 40 mol-% of ester groupings in the backbone are also biodegradable, wherein in the case of cationic copolymers a maximum of 20 mol-% quaternized DMAEMA may be present. Cationic copolymers containing at least 50 mol-% of component B are antimicrobial. Both anionic as well as cationic copolymers are suitable for the production of nanoparticles. Cationic copolymers can be used a superhydrophobic materials as well as adhesives. Anionic copolymers are suitable as biodegradable thermoplastic elastomers and as biodegradable ionomers.

The present invention relates to derivatives of α,α-disubstituted amide compounds which comprise a substituted aryl at the α carbon such that the substituent provides a means for attachment or incorporation of the compound to or in a polymer. The provision of such a substituent on the aryl has surprisingly been found not only to permit attachment to or incorporation in a polymer but also retention of useful antifouling activity. In embodiments, the substituent is selected from hydroxyl, ethers, esters, carboxyls, alkylsilyls and alkenyls. Experiments demonstrate that antifouling activity can be as good or better as the corresponding unsubstituted compound and that polymers functionalized so as to include or be formed from the substituted compound can be used to reduce settlement.
