The present invention relates to water-soluble, hydrophobically associating copolymers, which are obtained in the presence of a non-polymerisable, surface-active compound and which contain novel hydrophobically associating monomers. The monomers comprise an ethylenically unsaturated group and a polyether block, the polyether block containing a hydrophilic polyethyleneoxy block and a hydrophobic polyalkyleneoxy block, which consists of alkyleneoxy units having at least 4 carbon atoms. The monomers can optionally have a terminal polyethyleneoxy block. The invention further relates to a method for producing the copolymers and to the use thereof.

A highly stable aqueous solution of a partially saponified vinyl ester resin, which contains a partially saponified vinyl ester resin with a degree of saponification of 70 mol% or below in a concentration of 50 % by weight or below and has at a concentration of 30 % by weight a cloud point y (°C) satisfying the formula: 1ny > 0.042x + 1.0 wherein x represents the degree of saponification (mol%). This solution is highly useful, in particular, as a dispersion auxiliary for use in a suspension polymerization of vinyl compounds.
