The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of hydrophobically associating macromonomers M and to the novel macromonomers produced by the inventive method. The macromonomers M comprise a copolymerizable, ethylenically unsaturated group and a polyether structure in block form which comprises a polyethylenoxy block and a hydrophobic polyalkylenoxy block consisting of alkylenoxy-units with at least 4 carbon atoms. Optionally, the macromonomers M may comprise a terminal polyethylenoxy block. The macromonomers produced by the inventive method are suitable for reaction with other monomers, in particular with acrylamide, to form a water-soluble, hydrophobically associating copolymer.

The invention relates to methods for the production of polycarboxylate ethers, in which at least one bio-based starting material is used. The bio-based starting materials are, for example, selected from the group consisting of polyalkylene oxide, terminally modified polyalkylene oxide, acrylic acid or a salt thereof, methacrylic acid or a salt thereof and/or maleic acid or a salt thereof. The object of the invention is also a polycarboxylate ether which is at least partially bio-based. The polycarboxylate ether can be obtained in particular by the method according to the invention.

Provided is a binder for battery electrodes which includes a polymer including: structural units (1) derived from a (meth)acrylate monomer (A) having a hydroxyl group; structural units (2) derived from a polyfunctional (meth)acrylate monomer (B); and structural units (3) derived from a reactive surfactant (C). This binder is used to prepare electrodes, and produce batteries such as lithium ion secondary batteries. Provided are: an aqueous binder which has a low environmental impact, exhibits excellent binding properties, and, notably, does not cause oxidation degradation under an electrode environment; and an electrode and a battery which use said binder.
