The invention relates to a foam material on the basis of phenolic resin and to the use thereof. In order to provide a bio-based, thermosetting foam material with improved properties, in particular improved flame retardant properties, in essentially unchanged foam material properties, a foam material is proposed that is produced by at least the following steps: a) producing a prepolymer by condensation of at least one phenolic compound and formaldehyde in a ratio of 1 : 1.0 to 1 : 3.0 using 0.15 to 5 weight percent related to the amount of the raw materials used of an alkaline catalyst in the temperature range of 50 to 100 ºC until the refractive index of the reaction mixture is 1.4990 to 1.5020 and subsequently b) adding 2 to 40 weight percent related to the amount of the raw materials used of at least one natural polyphenol at a temperature of 50 to 100 ºC, c) adding 2 to 10 weight percent related to the amount of the raw materials used of one or more emulsifiers and mixtures thereof, d) adding 2 to 10 weight percent related to the amount of the raw materials used of one or more foaming agents and mixtures thereof and e) adding 10 to 20 weight percent related to the amount of the raw materials used of a curing agent and f) curing.

Storage stable aqueous dispersions of a heat-reactive hydrophilic phenolic resin (e.g., phenol/formaldehyde) are disclosed. The dispersions comprise a base resin that is the reaction product of an aromatic alcohol and an aldehyde, and an etherified resin component selected from the group consisting of an etherified phenol/aldehyde resin, an etherified cresol/aldehyde resin, and mixtures thereof. The dispersions further comprise a protective colloid (e.g., polyvinyl alcohol). The addition of the etherified resin component in an amount of at least about 20% by weight of the base resin provides storage stability, but does not adversely affect the desirable physical and chemical characteristics (e.g., chemical resistance) of end products made from such dispersions. Moreover, the dispersions of the present invention can avoid the use of etherified resin components derived from bisphenol-A and/or xylenols, which present heath concerns in food coating applications.
