摘要: Novel compounds obtainable by reacting together an imido-reagent such as diphenylphosphonimido-triphenylphosphorane), or a phosphine oxide such as p-tolyldiphenylphosphine oxide, with a chelate of a transition or lanthanide or actinide metal, such as tris(dibenzoylmethide) europium III, have the property of fluorescing in UV radiation. The invention includes solid polymer bodies containing such compounds, or chelates of transition or lanthanide or actinide metals generally, the bodies having the property of emitting light or infra-red radiation when subjected to a flux of ultra-violet or ionising radiation by virtue of internally generated, e.g. by tritium ionising radiation. The body is preferably of polystyrene formed by polymerising the monomer in the presence of the compound or metal chelate.

The present invention further comprises a method for rendering silliceous surfaces luminescent comprising applying the compound or composition to the surface and reacting the compound or composition with water after the compound or composition has migrated into the surface to hydrolyze the compound or composition. The present invention further comprises a luminescent structure having a siliceous surface incorporating the products of the reaction between the surface, water and the compound or composition of the present invention.

摘要: Living tissue cells such as from an animal or a plant are encapsulated in inorganic microspheres. An organosilicon precursor such as tetraethoxysilane or an organometallic precursor such as aluminum tri-n-propoxide is hydrolyzed in an aqueous acidic solution to form a gel forming solution. Tissue cells are mixed with a salt solution such as Hanks' Balanced Salt Solution to form a solution containing the tissue cells. The solution containing tissue cells and the gel forming solution are mixed to form a mixture. The mixture is mixed with an oil that is immiscible with the mixture and has a lower specific density than the mixture. The resultant mixture is stirred to form microspheres encapsulating the tissue cells. The mixture containing the tissue cells and the gel forming solution may be formed into droplets and added to the top of a column containing the oil to form the microspheres.
