A seal of the material retains strength before and after exposure to fire and provides superior resistance to the impact, erosion, and cooling effects of a hose stream used to combat a fire. The composition of this compressible, fireproof material consists of elastomers, vulcanizing agents, fillers, softening agents, and an intumescent. This fireproof material may be in cellular or noncellular form with various degrees of compressibility and softness. It can be produced in sheets, molded parts, and continuous length strips. It may be vulcanized or nonvulcanized.

Verfahren zur Herstellung einer im Brandfall aufschäumenden Brandschutzmasse für feuerabschirmende Verglasungen, insbesondere für feuerabschirmende Verglasungen aus zumindest zwei Glasscheiben und zumindest einem Scheibenzwischenraum, in dem die Brandschutzmasse angeordnet ist. Ein wasserlösliches Aluminiumsalz, eine anorganische Säure und eine Wassermenge werden zusammengebracht und zur Brandschutzmasse umgesetzt. Als Aluminiumsalz wird Monoaluminiumhydrophosphat Al(H₂PO₄)₃, als anorganische Säure wird Borsäure, H₃BO₃, verwendet. Das Umsetzungsprodukt wird durch die Wassermenge flüssig bis zähflüssig oder extrudierbar eingestellt. - Auch nach dem Verfahren hergestellte besondere Brandschutzmassen werden angegeben.

A fire retarding sealant comprises a silicone resin, a filler, a ceramic fire retardant such as zinc borate, a smoke suppressant such as stearate coated calcium hydroxide, and either aluminium hydroxide or magnesium hydroxide, preferably the former. The sealant is intumescent, and non-setting, and is intended for placement around pipes, cables and service penetrations in walls, floors and ceilings. At the temperatures encountered in fires, the aluminium hydroxide decomposes to form aluminium oxide and steam, the latter causing the sealant to intumesce while being relatively harmless to people (no halogen gases are evolved). The aluminium oxide and zinc borate form a crust on the intumesced sealant, providing a further fire retardant property.
