According to recent discoveries, geranonitrile has a possible mutagenic potential and is thus presently classified as a mutagen of category 3 (M:3), according to EU classifications. Geranonitrile was previously used as a fragrance as stable substitute for conventional citrus fragrances (such as citrals, for example) in technical products such as toilet cleaners and produces a desirable and pleasant citrus fragrance. A fragrance composition is disclosed, which may be use as substitute for geranonitrile and which has the advantages inherent in geranonitrile, such as freshness of the fragrance and stability of the composition, which is, however, considered toxicologically safe. The invention further relates to various agents such as washing and cleaning agents, comprising such a fragrance composition.

Also described is a process for preparing such 1-phenyl-1-cyano-C₅-C₇ alkanes by means of reacting benzyl cyanide with an aldehyde or ketone and then hydrogenating the resulting product using a supported palladium catalyst.

The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of organic-inorganic microcapsules, with a flavour or fragrance core and a hybrid shell composed of at least two types of inorganic particles that are cross-linked. Microcapsules obtained by said process are also an object of the invention. Consumer products comprising said capsules, in particular perfumed consumer products in the form of home care or personal care products, are also part of the invention.
