A method of treating aldehyde-tanned biological tissue minimizes in vivo calcification and reduces cytotoxicity without impairing the mechanical strength of the tanned tissue. The method includes the step of treating the aldehyde-tanned biological tissue with at least one liquid polyol having formula (I), where R is CH2OH or an alkyl group, and R' is H, an alkyl group or an O-acyl where the acyl is C2-C9 or a carboxyalkyl; or formula (II) where R is H or an alkyl group, and R' is H, an alkyl group, O-alkyl or O-carboxyalkyl. Preferred polyols are propylene glycol, 1,3-propanediol, 2,3-butylene glycol and glycerol, and the polyol is preferably a diol.

A leather obtained by a (1) pre-treatment before tanning, (2) tanning process where glutaraldehyde is used as a tanning agent, (3) process where a re-tanning agent is used which is constituted by synthetic tannin, resin and aluminum, of which the synthetic tannin is constituted by (a) condensation product of aromatic sulfonic acid with formaldehyde or mixture of aromatic sulfonic acid and condensation product of aromatic sulfonic acid with formaldehyde, (b) methylene cyclic polymer of aromatic sulfonic acid with hydroxy aromatic compound or mixture of aromatic sulfonic acid and methylene cyclic polymer of aromatic sulfonic acid with hydroxy aromatic compound and (c) glyoxal, while the resin is constituted by (a) acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, acrylic acid ester or methacrylic acid ester polymer(s) and mixture thereof, and copolymer(s) thereof or mixture thereof and (b) polycondensation product of melamine with formaldehyde, wherein the re-tanning agent having the aforementioned composition is used to perform re-tanning, followed by dyeing as well as fatliquoring treatment using a fatliquoring agent constituted by (a) synthetic oil and natural oil and (b) mixture of synthetic oil and natural constituent, and (4) post-treatment after re-tanning; wherein said leather is characterized in that it is flexible and has unique elasticity and softness beyond what is presented by the material hide and has restorability that prevents the leather from stretching more than it should, and also in that its conditions include a BLC stiffness/softness of 4.42 mm or more but 4.90 mm or less and maximum set ratio of 10.7 or more but 13.9 or less.

The invention further relates to a powder active agent containing one or more of said inventive tanning agents, to a method for the production of said powder active agents and to the use thereof as curing agent and to leather produced using the inventive tanning agents or the inventive method.

Un procédé de traitement d'un tissu biologique tanné à l'aldéhyde minimise la calcification in vivo et réduit la cytotoxicité sans affecter la résistance mécanique du tissu. Le procédé consiste à traiter le tissu biologique tanné à l'aldéhyde avec au moins un polyol liquide répondant à la formule (I), dans laquelle R représente CH2OH ou un groupe alkyle, et R' représente H, un groupe alkyle ou un O-acyle, l'acyle étant C2-C9 ou un carboxyalkyle; ou à la formule (II) dans laquelle R représente H ou un groupe alkyle, et R' représente H, un groupe alkyle, O-alkyle ou O-carboxyalkyle. Les polyols préférés sont propylèneglycol, 1,3-propanediol, 2,3-butylèneglycol et glycérol, et le polyol est de préférence un diol.
