Abstract:
The present invention provides aqueous, epoxy-based sizing compositions for carbon fibers. The size composition incorporates highly functionalized film forming epoxy novolac phenolic resins in combination with highly functionalized sulfonated polyesters having high Tg characteristics, sulfonate equivalent weights in the range from 2000 to 20,000 and number average molecular weights in the range from about 1000 to about 100,000. The present invention also provides corresponding sized carbon fibers and fiber-reinforced matrices.
Abstract:
A process for imparting durable water and oil repellency and durable soil release characteristics comprises the application of an aqueous mixture having a water repellent component such as a fluorocarbon polymer and a separate hydrophilic soil release polymer to a textile substrate, followed by a drying step. Optionally, a curing or thermosetting step may also be employed, if desired. This process is carried out in a preferred embodiment in a generally mild pH, which allows the process to be performed on a wide variety of textile substrates that may not be capable of withstanding more extreme pH values. Polyamides, aramids, polyesters, and poly/cotton substrates, when treated according to the present process, have all yielded improved performance with respect to durable water and oil repellency and durable soil release characteristics. A novel mixture or bath and novel treated substrates are also disclosed.
Abstract:
Water-soluble or water-dispersible and curable polyester resins are suitable as binders in various applications. The resins are reaction products of polyterephthalate, sulfoisophthalates, polyols, polyacids, end acids and crosslinker agents. Waste terephthalates can be utilized. The prefered polyol is pentaerythritol. The resins can also be used as dye levelling agents when dyeing synthetic fibers.
Abstract:
Novel sulfonated hydrodispersible or hydrosoluble polyesters with a molecular weight less than 20,000, having a sulphur content by weight of about 0.5-10 % and a hydroxyl function content, expressed in OH/kg polymer equivalent, greater than 0.2. The polyesters of the invention can be used as finishing or anti-redeposit agents and optionally as detergent agents in rinsing, softening or finishing compositions for washing with or without pretreatment, rinsing or softening or finishing textiles, especially polyester-based textiles.
Abstract:
A thermoplastic fiber demonstrates moisture wicking properties. The fiber has one or more internal lengthwise open channels each having an opening and at least one groove having a deepest point, a longest dimension and a mouth. The mouth is defined by moving a line from the deepest point along the longest dimension until the largest convex set is identified. The mouth is at the line segment closing the largest convex set. The mouth has width x wherein the average transverse cross-sectional area of the groove is greater than or equal to (πx 2 )/8. A durable hydrophilic surface modification is associated with said channel.
Abstract:
A water- and oil-repellent composition comprises (a) a repellency-imparting, fluorochemical composition comprising at least one fluorine-containing aromatic ester oligomer comprising (1) at least two repeat units derived or derivable from the reaction of at least one dicarboxylic acid (or a derivative thereof) and at least one polyol, with the proviso that either the dicarboxylic acid (or derivative) or the polyol (or both) is aromatic or heteroaromatic, and (2) fluorochemical endgroups derived or derivable from the reaction of (i) the dicarboxylic acid (or derivative) and at least one fluorine-containing monoalcohol, or (ii) the polyol and at least one fluorine-containing monocarboxylic acid; and (b) a treatable substrate; with the proviso that, when the treatable substrate comprises a mixture of at least two polymers, the mixture is non-stratifying.
Abstract:
Aqueous composition comprising at least one sulfonated copolyester, preferably a terephthalic copolyester, for cleaning carpets, including fitted carpets, curtains and covering fabrics at least partially made of hydrophobic synthetic polymer, in particular of polyester or polyamide, very particularly of polyamide, and/or for facilitating the removal of stains and dirt (soil release) therefrom.
Abstract:
The invention relates to novel liquid amphiphile polymers based on polyesters containing condensed acetal groups which are liquid at room temperature according to formula I (soil removing polymers). The invention further relates to the use of said polymers are in powder or liquid detergents and cleaning agents and to the use of said agents for washing and cleaning soiled surfaces and in textile processing.
