The inventive starter comprises: a starter drive assembly (18) which is equipped with a pinion (14) that can slide axially on the output shaft (12) between a rest position, in which it is disengaged from the ring gear (15), and an active operating position, in which it meshes with said ring gear, and a free-wheel transmission device (20) which is connected to a control lever (16). A stop element (30) is disposed on the output shaft (12) in order to limit the travel of the starter drive assembly (18) in the active operating position, said stop element (30) comprising a metallic ring (31) and an elastic element (40) which is provided in order to dampen the shock and reduce the noise when the pinion (14) engages with the ring gear.
