A centrifugal pump with a rotating impeller and a rotating diffuser. The diffuser may be rotated with a controlled speed to broaden the operational range of the pump. Such control may be done independently of the rotational speed of the impeller to tailor pump operation to a particular NPSH, efficiency, fluid flow or related requirement. In one preferred form, the impeller and diffuser are made to counter-rotate relative to one another, while the independent rotational speed of each may be provided by one or more motors, as well as a variable-speed transmission coupled to such motor or motors. Such a pump is optimized for specific speed operating ranges beneath those associated with axial flow pump configurations.

The support plates are electrically rotated in contrary directions about the common axis and the blades are so located that fluid is moved radially through the arrays of the support plates alternatively. A support plate (110) can be received between two contra-rotating plates (101, 102) with blades providing radial flows in opposite directions. Annular support plates (204) can be carried within a sleeve (202) to co-operate with plates (203) mounted on a coaxial shaft (201).

A fluid transfer coupling comprises a first shaft assembly a second shaft assembly, and a seal assembly. The first shaft assembly comprises a first shaft and an annular fin attached to the first shaft, the annular fin having one or more internal passages extending therethrough. The or each internal passage connects a centre portion of the first shaft to a radially outwardly facing side of the annular fin. The second shaft assembly comprises a second shaft and an annular trough extending radially outwardly of the second shaft. The first shaft is concentrically accommodated within the second shaft with the annular fin being accommodated within the annular trough. The seal assembly seals the annular trough against a radially outwardly facing surface of the first shaft assembly. In use, a fluid is delivered to the annular trough, the first shaft assembly rotates at a first rotational speed and the second shaft assembly rotates at a second rotational speed, with the second rotational speed being greater than the first rotational speed. The difference between the second rotational speed and the first rotational speed causes the fluid contained within the annular trough to be driven radially inwardly through the or each internal passage to the centre portion of the first shaft.

A fluid processing machine that includes a stator capable of generating an electromagnetic field and a first rotor section having at least one impeller and at least one permanent magnet. The stator is configured to electromagnetically engage with the first rotor section so as to rotate the first rotor section about a central axis in a first rotational direction. Further rotor sections can also be included that are induced to rotate in the first rotational direction. Other rotator sections with impellers and permanent magnets can also be included that are driven in a second, contra-rotating, direction by a second stator. Several of the fluid processing machine can be distributed within a surface system or subsea system that transports produced fluid from wells to a surface facility.
