This gear can be prevented from increasing in temperature and wearing and have improved durability. The gear has countless minute dimples randomly arranged in the tooth surface, wherein the surface having the dimples has a surface roughness parameter, Ryni, in the range represented by 0.8 µm≤Ryni≤2.3 µm. Thus, the tooth surface has the high ability to form an oil film. This gear can have a long life even when used under poor-lubrication conditions including a low viscosity and an extremely small oil-film thickness.

A method of superfinishing a large hollow wheel gear 1 in a vibratory bowl 10 having a centre hub 12 comprises at least partially filling the vibratory bowl with an amount of finishing media 11, laying the gear horizontally into the bowl over the centre hub, supplying a quantity of an active chemistry into the bowl and agitating the vibratory bowl at a frequency such that the gear settles into and is fully supported by the media. By controlling the process parameters, the hollow wheel gear may be caused to rotate in the media and can be made to float at a desired level. The method is particularly suitable for hollow wheel gears for large wind turbines.

This provides for the prevention of the occurrence of rattling noises caused by a vibration system including the reduction mechanism and the electric motor and the degradation of the steering feeling.
