A system for combustion and removal of residual carbon within fly ash particles (F) in which the fly ash particles are fed into a particulate bed (40) within a reactor chamber (21). The fly ash particles are subjected to heat and motive air (37) such that as the fly ash particles pass through the particulate bed, they are heated to a sufficient temperature to cause the combustion of the residual carbon within the particles. The fly ash particles thereafter are conveyed in a dilute phase (28) for further combustion through the reactor chamber away from the particulate bed and exhausted to an ash capture (45). The fly ash is then separated from the exhaust air that conveys the ash in its dilute phase with the air being further exhausted and the captured fly ash particles being fed to a feed accumulator (80) for re-injection to the reactor chamber or discharged for further processing.

Solid fuel such as coal is fed into an inlet shaft 4 of the furnace through a rotary feeder 5 constructed to prevent the admission of air. Primary air channels 18 supply the major part of the air required for combustion of the fuel in a region in which the fuel bed is sufficiently thick to avoid disturbance and the formation of "holes" by this air. Further, narrower air channels 19 supply sufficient, diffused and low velocity air to complete the combustion of the fuel without substantial entrainment of grit and ash. A VOC treatment apparatus is provided for treating substantially opaque VOCs and comprises a processing chamber (24) in which VOCs are treated; and a solar energy introducing device (8). The solar energy introducing device (8) comprises a tubular structure having a first end located external to the processing chamber (24) and having a first inlet (14) through which concentrated sunlight is received and a second inlet (16) through which a flow of substantially optically transmittant gas is received. The solar energy introducing device (8) has a second end (18) that opens into the processing chamber (24) and terminates in a nozzle providing an outlet for the substantially optically transmittant gas and the concentrated sunlight. In use the optically transmittant gas exits the second end of the device in a jet to create an optically transmittant zone in the substantially opaque VOCs within the processing chamber (24), in which zone the sunlight can travel.
