A preferred burner face (39), when fired at atmospheric pressure, yields radiant surface combustion with interspersed areas of blue flame combustion. A rigid but porous mat (107) of sintered metal fibers with interspersed bands of perforations is illustrative of a preferred burner face that can be fired at pressures exceeding 3 atmospheres at the rate of at least about 500,000 BTU/her/sf/atm.

The invention relates to a burner (10) for mixing and burning of at least two combustion media (28, 38, 48), in particular combustion air and a lean gas as the gaseous fuel. The burner comprises a plurality of burner nozzles which each comprise at least three pipes (20, 30, 40) arranged coaxially in relation to each other. The pipes are at a distance from each other in the radial direction to form annular clearance ducts (39, 49) through which combustion media can be conveyed into a combustion chamber. The arrangement according to the invention results in good mixing and combustion of a plurality of gaseous combustion media.
