In a flare stack system for the flaring of waste gases, in which the flare stack (10) es equipped with the steam injection parts (16, 18, 20), such as nozzles (20) or manifolds (16), adjacent the flame zone (12) at the outlet end of the stack, means are provided for alternate injection of air (32) from the blower (42) or live steam (50) through the steam injection parts. The alternate flow is controlled by two pneumatically controlled valves (36, 48) in the blower air line (32) and the other in the steam line (50), such that when one valve is closed, the other is open, and vice versa. The objective of the alternate supply of air and steam is for the purpose of cooling the steam injection parts when the full flow of steam is not required, because there is no waste gas flow or only a minimal gas flow. In that case, the heat of the maintenance gas flow may be sufficient to injure the steam injection parts, which must be coiled by passage of a gas through them. When the ambient temperature is below freezing a small flow of steam is unsatisfactory since it readily condenses to liquid, and can form ice over the parts of the main gas flow outlets, etc. In this condition, air at low pressure is used to cool the parts and when the gas flow is large, the two valves are switched, the air is cut off and the full steam flow is initiated.

An apparatus for vaporization of liquids having a boiling point lower than that of water, comprising a vessel having at least three narrow planar plena, contiguous to each other, so that there is a single metal wall between each adjacent pair of plena. Gaseous fuel and air is supplied to the first plenum to provide a downflowing flame and hot products of combustion which, at the bottom of the first plenum, pass through the wall into the second plenum, which is filled with water. The hot gases and water rise rapidly in the second plenum and the water flows over the intervening wall into the third plenum, which is also filled with water, which moves downwardly and back under the wall separating the second and third plena and again rises in the second plenum. A vertical array of horizontal pipes is arranged in the third plenum, through which the liquid to be vaporized is flowed. Means are provided at the base of the first plenum, to distribute the flow of hot gases substantially uniformly over the cross-section, to provide more rapid and uniform heat transfer from the hot gases to the liquid. The hot water flowing downwardly over the pipes in the third plenum, transfers heat to the liquid therein, which flows countercurrently, upwardly through the pipes in zig-zag fashion. The cooled products of combustion are vented from the top of the space above the second and third plena to a stack. An optimum embodiment comprises a symmetrical assembly with duplicate second and third plena on each side of the first plenum.

A multi-fuel gas burner using preheated forced draft air, comprising a cylindrical inner burner tube (12), supported by the wall of a furnace (34) and inserted into an opening in the wall, means (94, 95, 96 and 97) being provided to inject through the upstream end combustion air preheated to a selected temperature and compressed to a selected pressure. The downstream end of the inner burner tube is closed and a plurality of longitudinal slots (72) are circumferentially spaced in the wall of the tube at the closed end. Means (18) are provided to inject rich fuel gas up to 3,500 btu / cu feet under selected pressure into the inner bumer tube along its axis. An outer burner tube (22) axially surrounds the inner burner tube and forms an annular passage (49) therebetween. Means (28) are also provided to pass low pressure, lean, combustible gas of as low as 50 btu/cu feet down the annular passage (49) and outwardly through a circumferential slot (56) at the end of the outer burner tube inside the furnace. The hot combustion air and rich gas flowing through the inner tube and radially outwardly and rearwardly through the plurality of slots, flow against the mix with the lean gas flowing outwardly through the circumferential slot, and burn against the surface (38) of a tile (36), having a central opening, through which the burner is inserted into the furnace.
