A rotary hearth furnace is provided to simplify detachment and assembly operations of a reduced iron discharging screw. At both side walls of an insulating housing 2a constituting in part of a furnace body 2 of a rotary hearth furnace 1 are installed through-holes which a spiral blade 42 of a reduced iron discharging screw 4 can pass through, each of the through-holes is closed by an inner hatch member 8 and an outer hatch member 9 which are externally mounted in a removable fashion to a rotary shaft 41 of the reduced iron discharging screw 4, an inner screw supporting device 10 is installed in the outside at an inner periphery side of the hearth 3 as well as an outer screw supporting device 20 is installed in the outside at an outer periphery side of the hearth 3. The reduced iron discharging screw 4 is detached from the furnace body 2 via the through-holes and assembled to the furnace body 2 via the through-holes by using the inner screw supporting device 10 and the outer screw supporting device 20.

At least a zone of the hood comprises an expansion chamber located above at least a portion of said metal charge, and able to expand and keep said fumes inside it for a minimum desired time of at least 1.5 seconds before they go into contact with the metal charge.

The present invention refers to a method and an equipment for curing and drying self-reducing agglomerates containing cement as a binder in the presence of saturated vapor at a temperature from about 70 to about 110°C and under atmospheric pressure. The treatment is performed in one single equipment. The self-reducing agglomerates are comprised of mixtures of fines of iron ore and/or industrial residue containing iron oxides and/or metallic iron, fines of carbonaceous materials such as mineral coal, charcoal, green petroleum coke and similar fines fluxing material such as steel plant slag and blast furnace slag, limestone, lime and similar materials, cement as a binder and fluxing agent, and humidity between 7 and 12%, produced in pellet-making units and/or briquette-making units and thereafter treated using one single piece of equipment, involving the steps of predrying with heated gasses (2), curing with saturated vapor (3) and drying with heated gasses (4) performed continuously and sequentially, controlling the discharge velocity (5) in order to allow the time of permanence of the agglomerate within the equipment to be from about 4 to about 12 hours. The cured and dried agglomerate may be processed in an adequate reducing/melting equipment to provide metals and metallic alloys.

A process for removing sulphur dioxide from the gaseous effluent of a smelter furnace comprising the steps of: providing the gaseous effluent from a smelter; separating the sulphur dioxide from the gaseous effluent to provide concentrated sulphur dioxide and effluent for discharge into the atmosphere; mixing the concentrated sulphur dioxide with a fuel gas; heating the mixture such that the concentrated sulphur dioxide and fuel gas react to form a gaseous product mixture comprising sulphur and hydrogen sulphide; and removing the majority of, preferably substantially all of, the sulphur and hydrogen sulphide from the gaseous product mixture; wherein the remaining gaseous product mixture is incinerated before being vented into the atmosphere or is recycled into the smelter furnace.
