A cooling assembly and method are disclosed. The cooling assembly comprises: a heat sink base thermally coupleable with a heat-generating component to be cooled; cooling fins thermally connected with the heat sink base to provide a thermal path from the heat-generating component to the cooling fins; and a displacement mechanism operable to reciprocate the cooling fins. By providing an arrangement where the cooling fins themselves reciprocate, the heat transfer to the ambient environment is significantly increased since the reciprocation of the cooling fins helps to break up the thermal and flow boundary layers of the ambient fluid surrounding the assembly and helps to promote more flow mixing and heat transfer away from the cooling fins' surface to the ambient environment. This provides an assembly which can be smaller in volume than either existing passive or forced air arrangement and, even with that smaller volume, can provide increased cooling performance.

The method is characterized in that it comprises at least one first periodic action (13) that is performed on the regulated incoming current of the physical medium (2) represented by refrigerating agents and at least one second periodic action (11) that is performed on the same physical medium in a refrigerating chamber. In this way, the flow of the physical medium (2) is formed and the necessary and adequate conditions for cooling the same are created. At least one refrigerating medium (3) and at least cold-absorbing medium (6) are caused to interact in a heat exchanging system (1). The invention also comprises at least one third periodic action (10) which is performed on a cold-absorbing medium. In this way the physical medium is continuously and/or periodically decontaminated and the necessary and adequate conditions for the functioning of the decontamination system in its steady state are created.
