There is provided a proximity to a target, detection system, including a laser transmitter for transmitting a beam of radiation at a predetermined wavelength temporal and spatial shape, towards a target from which the proximity is to be determined, a small dimensions body having an opening for admitting radiation reflected from the target, the body housing a receiver for receiving the reflected beam radiation from the target and directing it towards a detector in the body for producing a signal. The detector includes a detection logic circuit allowing detection of reflected radiation for producing an output signal when the body is at a predetermined range from the target and in consideration of the temporal or spatial relative strength of the signal produced by the detected radiation of the reflected beam. A method for detecting the proximity of a body to a radiation- reflecting surface of a target, is also provided.

A proximity sensing system and signal processing method for detecting target objects from a movable vehicle (80) while protecting against false target detection due to the presence of fog, clouds, or other aerosols. One or more target detectors (202) are alternately disposed adjacent to one or more guard detectors (201; 203) so the edges of the fields of view are immediately adjacent. A collimated laser beam (B) is projected away from the vehicle by a transmitter (30) along an axis which intersects at an angle with the adjacent fields of view defining active areas in which the beam will be reflected from objects. Signals generated from any beam reflections to a target detector are made positive while signals generated by any beam reflections to a guard detector are made negative with respect to a threshold reference. The signals are summed in a differential amplifier and the resultant signal presented to a digital comparator.

The invention relates to an active proximity fuse with polarisation-related sensitivity. Radiation (11) which is reflected by particles (10) in the atmosphere towards the receiver (8) of the proximity fuse and which does not originate from reflection at the target (3) has a negative effect on the operation of a proximity fuse. To reduce this effect, the proximity fuse according to the invention is provided with elements (5) in the transmitter (1) of the proximity fuse for linearly polarising the emitted radiation (6) and elements (12) in the receiver (8) for suppressing the received radiation with linear polarisation essentially coinciding with the direction of the linear polarisation of the emitted radiation (6). This arrangement prevents radiation (11) which is reflected by spherical particles (10), such as water droplets, with unchanged polarisation after reflection, from reaching the detector of the receiver, whilst radiation reflected by the target (3) is depolarised and a certain part of the radiation (9) can be detected.

An optical receiver is divided into two receiver portions (5, 6). Each respective receiver portion is operative to receive an associated strobe (3, 4, respectively) or group of strobes. The receivers are capable to distinguish reflected radiation from each respective lobe relative to the radiation emitted and reflected from the other lobes. The radiation signal received from each respective lobe is individually processed in the receiver.

Um dem Panzerungsschutz von Fahr- und Flugzeugen besser zu begegnen, müssen Projektile in einem geringen, mechanisch und auch mit dem herkömmlichen Impulslaufzeitverfahren nicht darstellbaren Abstand vor dem Aufschlag am Ziel gezündet werden. Um die Auflösung solcher Abstände zu gewährleisten, wird das Projektil zwar mit einem nach dem Impulslaufzeitverfahren arbeitenden Laserentfernungsmesser (3) ausgerüstet. Im Gegensatz zu dem herkömmlichen gewährleistet das erfindungsgemaße Prinzip besonders exakte Messungen dadurch, daß das Signal der Empfangsdiode (5) durch einen vom Sendeimpuls (18) abgeleiteten, definiert zeitverzögerten Nadelimpuls (20) abgetastet wird und das so entstehende niederfrequente Abbild (24,33) des Empfangsimpulses (18') über einen NF-Verstärker (21) einer Triggerschaltung zugeführt wird. Ein solcher Sensor kann als Abstands- oder Annäherungssensor Verwendung finden (Figur 6).
