An in-line roller skate (10) includes a transducer portion (24) capable of sensing the rotary movement of at least one wheel (23) on the roller skate and transmitting information concerning the same to a receiver (26) worn on a user's wrist. In the preferred embodiment, the transducer portion includes a magnet (28) attached to one of the plurality of wheels and a sensor (30) positioned in a shoe portion to detect the magnet and produce electrical pulses containing information corresponding to the angular velocity of the wheel. The transducer portion also includes a micro-controller (34), a transmitter (35) and an antenna (36). The micro-controller creates a digital data stream containing information corresponding to the angular velocity of the wheel, which is then modulated onto a carrier wave produced by the transmitter. The transmitter (35) transmits the coded signals to the receiver (26). The receiver demodulates the carrier wave, reproducing the digital data stream. A microprocessor (50) processes the modulated signals and drives a display (52) to produce a real time visual representation of selected portions of information contained in the digital data stream, including speed and distance travelled by the skate.

The skating device is further provided with means for measuring and displaying at least one motion of rotation, especially the speed of at least one roller-dependent parameter. The invention especially relates to inline skaters with a base body that is or can be secured to a boot and with a plurality of rollers disposed in line. According to the invention, a housing is disposed in the vicinity of one of the rollers, preferably in the vicinity of the last roller, and is forced or can be forced against the circumference of the corresponding roller by means of a spring force. Within said housing a measuring roller is rotatably disposed and, in the direction of said roller, slightly projects through an opening in the housing facing the corresponding roller. Said measuring roller has an axis of rotation that is parallel to the roller axis and is or can be forced against the circumference of the roller by means of a spring force. The housing is further provided with means for detecting the motion of rotation, especially the rotating speed of the measuring roller and with a transmitter that emits a signal representative of the motion of rotation, especially the rotating speed or travel. At a distance to the housing, preferably on the hand, especially on the hand protector meant for protecting the hand of the skater, a transceiver is disposed that is provided with a computer circuit and that receives the signals emitted by the transmitter.
