The backup instrument comprises means for calculating and displaying flight information on the basis of data supplied by associated sensors (41, 42, 43, 45) incorporated into a backup system. It also comprises a module (403) that detects that the aircraft is overloaded on the basis of the data supplied to display the flight information. The invention applies in particular to the detection of overload during heavy landings. More generally, it applies to the detection and display of overloading of an aircraft in various types of environment.

Disclosed is a method of and an arrangement for real time estimation of the location of the center of gravity of an aircraft. The center of gravity estimate is utilized in an aircraft flight control system for effecting flight control laws in which the center of gravity is a parameter that at least in part establishes open loop compensation or feedback gain. The disclosed method and arrangement are specifically adapted for establishing stabilizer mistrim during a landing procedure in which an aircraft flight control system is automatically controlling the aircraft. The method generally comprises the steps of generating a signal that represents the product of the aircraft stabilizer position and a multiplicative factor, A₁ and adding to that product an additive factor, A₂. The multiplicative factor, A₁, and the additive factor, A₂, both are determined on the basis of the angle of attack of the aircraft and the aircraft flap setting.

The method includes: determining an initial value of a center of gravity prior to a start of a journey, and receiving a value for a consumption of a fuel for the journey; determining, by a processor, a change in the center of gravity at each waypoint based on the initial value and the fuel consumed; generating a first user interface that illustrates the center of gravity at the waypoints over the journey and that illustrates that the change in the center of gravity exceeds a predefined threshold; based on the change in the center of gravity exceeding the predefined threshold, generating, a second user interface that provides a selection to bring the center of gravity below the predefined threshold; and updating the first user interface based on the selection.
