A method and system for estimating velocity of an aircraft is provided. The method comprises transmitting a beam toward a surface from the aircraft using a Doppler beam sharpened radar altimeter, receiving a plurality of reflected signals that correspond to portions of the transmitted beam that are reflected by the surface, and forming a plurality of Doppler beams by filtering the received signals. A complex-valued array of range bin is computed with respect to frequency of the Doppler beams from at least one antenna aperture of the radar altimeter, and a range for each of the Doppler beams is estimated. A velocity vector magnitude for the aircraft is estimated by a curve fit of the range with respect to the frequency of the Doppler beams.

A method for removing clutter related frequency components from power spectrums generated from weather radar return signals to provide improved windshear detection capability. Weather radar return signals are synchronously detected and digitized to provide i and q time domain sample sequences. The i and q time domain sample sequences are passed through a window function and then transformed to frequency domain sequences by a Fast Fourier Transform. A power spectrum is generated from the frequency domain sequences. The spectrum is subjected to a Spectral Gaussian Envelope Discrimination (SGED) process in which the spectral envelope is scanned to identify any lobe therein having a slope greater than a predetermined minimum. A first pseudo-Gaussian sigma, calculated from the width and maximum amplitude of any such lobe, is compared with a second pseudo-Gaussian sigma, calculated from known conditions. If the first sigma is less than the second sigma, the lobe is deemed to be clutter related and is edited from the spectral envelope.

A vehicle carries a radar transmitter (12) and receiver (14) which provides a Doppler signal representing vehicle ground speed. The Doppler signal is processed by a Schmitt trigger (18) and a flip-flop (20)to generate a symmetrical square wave whose instantaneous pulse-width is the reciprocal of the Doppler frequency. A microprocessor is interrupted by edges of the square wave and processes the pulse-width to produce a symmetrical output square wave (23). The processing steps comprise: (1) Input pulse widths exceeding a threshold value set by a timer are ignored (2) When the input pulse width INVAL is within 12½% of the output pulse width OUTVALthe latter is updated in accordance with a weighted average, OUTVAL = (15 OUTVAL + INVAL)/16 (3) When the input pulse width INVAL deviates more than 12;% from the output pulse width OUTVAL no updating occurs unless this situation has persisted for 8 or more input pulses, whereupon more abrupt updating occurs in accordance with a second weighted average OUTVAL = (3 OUTVAL + INVAL)/4 where INVAL is the average INVAL over 8 input pulses when the second weighted average is first used but is the latest input width when the situation has persisted for more than 8 input pulses.

In certain embodiments, a method for adjusting bandwidth for at least one Doppler filter in a Doppler beam sharpened radar altimeter comprises receiving a velocity measurement; adjusting the bandwidth of the at least one Doppler filter based on the velocity measurement; and transmitting a radar beam, wherein the radar beam is aimed toward a surface. The method further comprises receiving at least one reflected signal, wherein the at least one reflected signal is a reflection of the radar beam being reflected off of at least one portion of the surface; and filtering the at least one reflected signal with the at least one Doppler filter to form at least one Doppler beam.
