A multi-mode imaging system provides the capability of reproducing documents in a conventional COPY mode wherein a document (12) is placed on a platen (14) and scanned to create an exposed latent image on a photosensitive member (24). The system is adapted to operate in a second, print (WRITE) mode wherein an image bar (40), such as a light-emitting diode (LED) array or a liquid crystal shutter (LCS), is placed into optical alignment with a fixed optical system (18, 20, 22) including a linear lens array (22). The image bar is electrically addressed (62) to create a light output in an image-wise pattern. The image output is optically coupled into the lens array (22) which projects the image onto the photosensitive member (24). In one embodiment, the image bar is partially within the end portion (14ʹ) of a movable plate (14).

When electric charges are selectively applied to the pixel electrodes 136 via the TFTs 122a,122b, or when electric charges of the pixel electrodes 136 are selectively eliminated via the TFTs 122a,122b, an electrostatic latent image with a potential different from a potential of its surrounding area is formed on the surface of the electrostatic latent image forming medium.

A surface of a pyroelectric layer (1) of a latent image charge keeping medium (3) is selectively heated by a thermal head (4) according to a video signal. In a heated portion of the medium (3), there is collected electric charge to form an elecrtrostatic latent image (17) on the surface of the pyroelectric layer (1). When the latent image (17) is developed by a developer (7), a developing sleeve (10) is applied with an appropriate bias voltage obtained according to temperatures of the thermal head (4), the latent image charge keeping medium (3) and the apparatus sensed by temperature sensors (21, 21a, 21b). This keeps the potential contrast between the latent image (17) and the sleeve (10) to remain within a favorable range in any situation. Consequently, even when the charge density of the latent image becomes excessive due to, for example, heat accumulation of the thermal head (4), it is possible to prevent increase in the recording density so as to suppress the foggy portion in the picture.

A method and apparatus for printing including the use of a pyroelectric material (12) in a novel fashion to directly mark an image on a print substrate (40). The image is produced by initially coating a poled pyroelectric material (12) with a uniform coating of charged marking particles and subsequently thermally exposing the pyroelectric material (12) in a localised fashion, thus reversing the polarity of the charge which repels the particles from the surface of the pyroelectric material (12), and in the direction of the surface of a print substrate (40) placed in close proximity thereto. Subsequently, the image formed by the transferred marking particles is fixed to the substrate (40) by a thermal or other well known fusing treatment.
