An integrated circuit includes a holographic recording material substantially filling a cavity in a semiconductor layer. During operation of the integrated circuit, a holographic pattern in the holographic recording is reconstructed and used to diffract an optical signal propagating in a plane of an optical waveguide, which is defined in the semiconductor layer out of the plane through the cavity. In this way, the holographic recording material may be used to couple the optical signal to an optical fiber or another integrated circuit.

A reflective membrane (11) is deformed by one or more of a multiplicity of underlying address electrodes (14), such that it has a different center of curvature depending on which electrode is being energized. A lens (16) collimates light reflected from the membrane so that a beam is reflected in a desired direction relative to the incoming beam.

One or more hologram(s) may be recorded into/onto the photopolymer film to enable the lens to be used as a transparent holographic combiner in a wearable heads-up display employing an image source, such as a microdisplay or a scanning laser projector. The methods of integrating photopolymer film with eyeglass lenses include: positioning photopolymer film in a lens mold and casting the lens around the photopolymer film; sandwiching photopolymer film in between two portions of a lens; applying photopolymer film to a concave surface of a lens; and/or affixing a planar carrier (with photopolymer film thereon) to two points across a length of a concave surface of a lens. Respective lenses manufactured/adapted by each of these processes are also described.
