Also, the operations management device obtains the power consumption of the devices, the power supply loss of the power supply facilities and the cooling power of the cooling facilities by using the layout information, and then allocates the workloads to the devices so as to reduce the total sum of power consumption, supply loss and cooling power.

For the planning of energy-efficient operation of automation devices of an industrial automation system, automation devices to be controlled and/or monitored are represented in a simulation system. In the simulation system, a respective field bus interface is associated with selected automation devices, by means of which field bus interface an automation device can be switched into specified operating states in order to control energy consumption. Respective energy profile parameters of an associated automation device can be queried by means of field bus interfaces represented in the simulation system, which energy profile parameters comprise a current operating state, available energy-saving operating states, a switchover characteristic, and/or an operating-state-dependent energy consumption. A material flow simulation is performed for a specifiable goods input course. By means of said material flow simulation, operating times and idle times specific to the automation devices can be determined. Switching sequences for operation that reduces energy consumption are determined on the basis of the determined operating times and idle times and on the basis of queried energy profile parameters.
