In a method of replacing tools of the invention, a first NC program (NCP1) is prepared in an integral form containing instructions (ATC1 to ATC3) for automatically selecting a tool, to be used for each of the steps (MP1 to MP3) and the machining instructions (MC1 to MC3) for the tools, and the first NC program (NCP1) is stored in a memory of an NC apparatus. Then, the NC apparatus executes the numerical control based on the second NC program (NCP2). That is, the NC apparatus supplies the machine side with the tool number DELTADELTADELTA that has been read out for the next step prior to effecting the machining instruction (MC1 to MC3) for the present step so as to cause the automatic tool exchanger to carry a tool for the next step to the stand-by position, while operating the machining based on the machining instruction of the present step.

Tool selection position and magnitude of slow down interval are set in advance through a manual data input device (17). Following the turn of the turret for proceeding to the next machining process, a reversible counter (5) counts pulses outputted from a pulse coder (4). A microcomputer (10) performs a closing operation of a flow rate control valve (8) through a valve driving means (6) when it discriminates that the turret has arrived at a slow-down start position on the basis of the result of comparison between a value obtained by deducting the magnitude of slow-down interval from the tool selection position and counting value of a counter. As a result, supply of pressure oil to a hydraulic motor decreases, causing the turret to slow down.
