This Application relates generally to optical data storage and retrieval systems, and, more particularly, to systems utilizing microfiche storage elements. The principal drawback of prior art carousel microfiche systems is limited storage capacity. Although a number of retrieval devices may be interconnected and controlled by means of a computer, such an arrangement is cumbersome, uses storage space inefficiently and is expensive. The present application resides in a multiple-carousel microfiche storage and retrieval system in which a plurality of microfiche carousels (20) are disposed about a turntable (22) that is rotatable with respect to a retractable retrieval station. When a new microfiche is selected for display, the one presently being displayed is returned to its position in the carousel (20), the retrieval station is retracted, and the turntable (22) is rotat- i ed, if necessary, to find the next selected microfiche.
