A method for image processing includes: (a) accessing, in a lookup table, a current pattern index for a current pixel based on a current pixel input value and a previous pattern index; (b) accessing, in a dither mask array, a threshold value for the current pixel based on a location of the current pixel; (c) comparing the current pattern index with the threshold value; (d) determining a current pixel output value for activation of the current pixel based on a result of the comparing; (e) storing the current pattern index to serve as the previous pattern index for a next image; and (f) repeating acts (a)-(e) for each pixel in the image.

Systems and methods are disclosed to enable the creation and the display of spatio-temporal dithered images. Embodiments include techniques that use color-shifting and luminance. In one embodiment, adjacent pixels (52, 54, 56, 58) are color-shifted with respect to each other and the color values of the adjacent pixels (52, 54, 56, 58) are temporally alternated with color values of pixels in the group. In another embodiment, the luminance of group (84) of adjacent pixels is determined and the luminance of the group (84) is made more homogenous spatially and temporally by distributing color variations over a larger number of pixels so as to reduce the luminance difference between the pixel with the least luminance and the pixel with the greatest luminance. Individual color components (e.g., red, green, blue) may also be separated and used so that the color-shifts associated with each color component may be simultaneously present in different pixels.

In the case of an objective pixel, it is converted into a first gray level, i.e. an average value of n (an integer of 2 or above) gray levels selected from among the display gray levels. Pseudo-profile of a moving image is reduced while sustaining gradation by performing first diffusion process of averaging the first gray levels spatially and/or temporally using the n gray levels.

The graphic engine converts externally received image data (4) into first bitmap data (21), and stores the first bitmap data in the work memory. The display memory receives and stores second bitmap data developed from the first bitmap data stored in the work memory. The driver circuit drives a display panel (3) in response to the second bitmap data received from the display memory. The display memory has the same number of columns as vertical data lines of the display panel.
