The noise occurring when applying dithering on a transfer function shall be reduced. Therefore, a first output value and a second output value are associated (S1) to a discrete input value of the transfer function. On the basis of a given number of dithering bits, an intermediate value being equal to and/or lying between the first output value and the second output value and using the least number of dithering bits is chosen (S2). Finally this intermediate value is taken (S3) as an output value for the discrete input value. Thus, the dithering noise can be reduced tremendously.

The invention relates to a method for processing data of video pictures for displaying the pictures on a display device like a Plasma Display Panel. The existing false contour effect compensation methods which make a false contour compensation based on shifting sub-field code word entries along the direction of the motion vector of a current pixel, produce an artifact in the pictures, in case of object crossings. In the appearing area there is a lack of light generation. The invention solves this problem by checking whether an area exists in the picture which is currently hidden but will appear in a next frame and providing an adapted compensation method for "hole filling". The invention also gives a solution for an improved compensation method which is based on a dragging of sub-field code word entries along a motion vector direction to a current pixel.

The invention relates to a method and a device for coding video levels of pixels of a colour component of a picture to be displayed on a display device into code words. The invention is more particularly applicable to Plasma Display Panels (PDP) to improve the picture quality (grayscale enhancement, dynamic false contour reduction). The main idea of the invention is to automatically change the floor and ceiling levels used classically for dithering each pixel value depending on the neighboring pixels of the same color component. The size of the window determining the neighboring pixels is dependent on the definition of the wanted flat field size.

The present invention relates to a method for displaying an image in an active matrix display device and more particularly in an active matrix OLED (Organic Light Emitting Display) display. The purpose of this invention is to increase the video dynamic range of each color component. The voltages applied to the OLED cells are based on reference voltages or currents. According to the invention, a different set of reference voltages is used for each colour component. To this end, the video frame is divided into at least three sub-frames and at least one colour component of the picture is addressed during each subframe with a set of reference voltages adapted to said color component.

Plasma Display Panels are becoming more and more interesting for TV technology. One important criterion for picture quality is the Peak White Enhancement Factor PWEF. In a previous patent application a method for power level control in a display with which the PWEF can be increased has been proposed. With an increased PWEF the problem of local overheating of plasma cells may occur. This invention proposes a protection circuit, which deals with this problem. For protecting the plasma display against local overheating, there is provided a method, which performs the steps of local power value determination, local temperature estimation, maximum local temperature determination and maximum power level limit determination. The power level limit influences the power level control process in the display device so that local overheating is avoided and the highest possible PWEF can be used. The invention also concerns a corresponding apparatus for carrying out the proposed method.

The present invention relates to a method of displaying a video image on a digital display device and particularly on a plasma display panel. According to the invention, the cells of the device change state at most once during the image display period and the subscans of this display period are two types. The subscans of the first type address two adjacent rows of the panel simultaneously and the subscans of the second type address each row of cells of the panel individually. In certain cases, the grey level delivered to the cells is modified before display. For two neighbouring cells sharing the same subscans of the second type and displaying the grey levels A and B, one of the grey levels, A or B, is modified if the first subscan for which one of the cells changes state is a subscan of the first type.
