The press element is provided with an instruction triggering port and at least one of a current transmission pin and a data transmission pin. The current transmission pin is electrically connected to the current transmission port to output or input current. When the press element is pressed toward the connecting element, the instruction triggering port comes into contact with the instruction transmission port to trigger instruction transmission.

The first switch comprises an upper conductive surface and a lower conductive surface that, when in contact, electrically couples two terminals for closing a circuit. The second switch comprises an actuator and a dome switch. When the key cap receives a first downward force, only the first switch becomes activated and a first electric circuit is completed. When the key cap receives a second downward force that is greater than the first force, the dome switch collapses and a second electric circuit is completed.

The improved method of enabling input into the handheld electronic device includes detecting a first input from a first input member, responsive to the first input, performing a first navigational function, such as a scrolling operation, at a first speed, detecting a second input form the first input member and, responsive to the second input, performing the first navigational function at a second speed, the second speed being different (e.g., greater) than the first speed. The input apparatus may include a substantially sealable, resilient membrane with the input members being disposed on the resilient membrane in order to provide an improved, ruggedized input apparatus.
