Passive switched-capacitor (PSC) filters are described herein. In one design, a PSC filter implements a second-order infinite impulse response (IIR) filter with two complex first-order IIR sections. Each complex first-order IIR section includes three sets of capacitors. A first set of capacitors receives a real input signal and an imaginary delayed signal, stores and shares electrical charges, and provides a real filtered signal. A second set of capacitors receives an imaginary input signal and a real delayed signal, stores and shares electrical charges, and provides an imaginary filtered signal. A third set of capacitors receives the real and imaginary filtered signals, stores and shares electrical charges, and provides the real and imaginary delayed signals. In another design, a PSC filter implements a finite impulse response (FIR) section and an IIR section for a complex first-order IIR section. The IIR section includes multiple complex filter sections operating in an interleaved manner.

A composite resonance circuit is provided of which the resonance frequency is variable over a wide frequency range without changing the circuit constant of a non-resonant element having no resonance frequency. The composite resonance circuit comprises an input terminal; a resonance unit having first and second ports and quasi-resonating in response to AC signals respectively supplied to these ports; and phase shift circuits that perform different phase shifts on an AC signal supplied to the input terminal and supply first and second shifted signals subjected to the phase shift respectively to the first and second ports. The resonance unit is an impedance circuit that has at least four input terminals forming the first and second ports and that generates a quasi-resonant peak current under non-zero reactance in response to the first and second shifted signals coming in via the first and second ports. The quasi-resonant peak current is variable according to the frequency and phase shift quantities of the AC signals. Namely, the resonance frequency can be made to be variable.

The present invention relates generally to communications, and more specifically to a method and apparatus for generating local oscillator signals used for up- and down-conversion of RF (radio frequency) signals. A major problem in the design of modulators and demodulators, if the leakage of local oscillator (LO) signals into the received signal path. The invention presents a number of highly integratable circuits which resolve the LO leakage problem, using regenerative divider circuits acting on oscillator signals which are running at a multiple or fraction of the frequency of the desired LO signal, to generate in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) mixing signals. Embodiments of these circuits also use harmonic subtraction and polyphase mixers, as well as virtual local oscillator TM (VLO) mixing signals. VLO mixing signals are signal pairs which emulate local oscillator signals by means of complementary mono-tonal and multi-tonal mixing signals.

In a receiver (2) the input signal is converted by a mixer (4) into two quadrature IF signals. The quadrature IF signals are amplified by an amplifier (12) and filtered by a filter (14). A polyphase filter (16) suppresses signals having frequencies above a predetermined frequency. A second mixer (15) converts the filtered IF signal into a second IF signal. This second IF signal is filtered by a second polyphase filter (19) which suppresses signals having a frequency below a predetermined frequency. In this way a band-pass transfer function is obtained having a first edge defined by the first polyphase filter (16) and having the second defined by the second polyphase filter (19). In an embodiment of the invention, the cut off frequencies of the polyphase filters (14 and 19) are equal to zero, resulting in a transfer function for the complete receiver having cut off frequencies independent from the component values used in the polyphase filters.
