A station selecting apparatus comprises a preset signal generating circuit in the form of a charging/discharging circuit (23) including a parallel connection of a variable resistor (231) and a capacitor (232) and being adapted to generate a pulsive preset signal having a pulse width determined by the discharging time constant of the charging/discharging circuit (23). A variable reactance device which determines the tuning frequency is controlled in accordance with the pulse width of the preset signal. A semifixed resistor (236) is connected between the variable resistor (231) of the circuit (23) and the ground for the purpose of defining the minimum pulse width of the preset signal and a further semifixed resistor (238) is connected in parallel with the variable resistor (231) for the purpose of defining the maximum pulse width of the preset signal, so that the tuning frequency is limited to a predetermined range.

An electronically tuned radio receiver adapted for digital selection is provided with circuit means (b9) for detecting that the received frequency is outside a band, and circuits (60, 62, 48, 50) for bringing the received frequency back within the band in response to an output from the circuit means (b9). In changing over bands, these circuits make it possible to avoid the inconvenience of changing the received frequency to a value below the lower frequency limit of a band. Moreover, pulse generator circuits (144, 142) are connected to the strobe terminal G of a multiplexer (46) which changes over selection systems. This circuit is intended to rationalize selection speed.

An automatic frequency control system comprises frequency measuring means (IFM), which produces a frequency quantity representing the frequency of its input signal, and controllable-frequency signal generating means (VCO), which produces an output signal whose frequency depends on a control signal supplied to its control input. In a normal mode of operation, IFM derives its input signal from an external source connected to an input terminal (T), and the system derives from the frequency quantity produced by IFM a control signal for VCO, using a predetermined transfer characteristic, so that the output frequency of VCO is dependent on the frequency of the input signal to IFM, being for example equal to the frequency of the signal at T. In order that the system may have an accurate and rapid response, said transfer characteristic is predetermined in a calibration mode of operation in which different control signals for VCO are derived from a calibration signal generator (CSG), consequent input signals for IFM are derived from the output of VCO, and different consequent frequency quantities produced by IFM are associated with respective control signals for VCO by storing digital words representing these control signals in a random-access memory (RAM) at respective addresses which are consequent frequency quantities from IFM. The system may be recalibrated at intervals to take account of drifts in the system.

It is an object of the invention to provide a channel selecting unit capable of implementing a channel selecting operation accurately in a short time with a simple circuit configuration. AFT voltages from a tuner 10 of a picture recording and playback portion 1 and a tuner 20 of a receiver portion 2 are detected by an AFT voltage detecting portion 30, while a synchronous signal separated at a video information processing portion 13 of the picture recording and playback portion 1 is counted by a pulse counter 31 and the presence or absence of synchronization is detected by a synchronization detecting potion 33. A channel selecting portion 32 transmits a tuning instruction signal to the tuner 10 and allows tuning frequency data f 1 and an AFT voltage value V 0 , at the time when synchronization was detected, to be stored in a storage portion 4, thereby implementing the channel selecting operation based on stored data at the time of channel select processing of the tuner 20.

A fast tuning subsystem includes a tuner (24A, 24B) for selecting a channel, with a voltage controlled oscillator for determining the channel frequency the tuner selectively receives. A predictor supplies a selected predicted voltage signal from memory (56) to the oscillator to slew the channel frequency at a rapid slew rate to the frequency corresponding to the selected predicted voltage signal. An error detector (26) generates a tuning error signal indicative of the tuning error of the tuner off the frequency for the selected channel. The tuning error signal is combined (76) with the selected predicted voltage signal to provide a control signal for adjusting the channel frequency to reduce the tuning error. This feedback provides successively a relatively fast correction mode and a relatively slow station-keeping mode. The tuning subsystem automatically and from time to time updates the signals stored in the memory for respective channels.
