The present invention discloses an optical switching apparatus, an optical cross-connect node, and an optical signal switching method. The optical switching apparatus includes: N input ports, N OAM modulators in a one-to-one correspondence with the N input ports, an OAM splitter, and M output ports, where the M output ports are in a one-to-one correspondence with M OAM modes; a first input port of the input ports is configured to input a first optical signal, a target output port of the first optical signal is a first output port; a first OAM modulator corresponding to the first input port modulates the first optical signal into an optical signal of a first OAM mode corresponding to the first output port; the OAM splitter transmits, to the first output port, the first optical signal received from the first OAM modulator; and the first output port outputs the first optical signal. The optical switching apparatus, the optical cross-connect node, and the optical signal switching method in the present invention are applicable to a WDM network or an OAM network and free from a congestion problem, and have a low requirement for environmental stability.

In each of a plurality of submarine observation apparatus (1 to n), a branching unit (63) branches fixed-wavelength light (λ1) from an incoming wavelength-multiplexed light signal. An observation signal modulating unit (64) modulates the intensity of the branched fixed-wavelength light (λ1) with observation information multiplexed by an observation signal multiplex unit (61). A combining unit (65) combines light signals (λ2) to (λn) passing through the branching unit (63) and the fixed-wavelength light (λ1a) modulated by the observation signal modulating unit (64) into a composite light signal, and outputs it to an optical fiber (12a). Therefore, in each of the plurality of submarine observation apparatus (1 to n), there is no necessity for providing a wavelength-division-multiplexing-transmission optical transmitter which requires high wavelength stability.

The present invention provides an improved optical frequency demodulation technique for extracting overhead information from an optical channel signal carrying both high bit rate payload and low rate overhead data. The invention makes use of asymmetrical Mach-Zehnder interferometry (AMZI) in an optical frequency demodulator to efficiently extract the overhead information from the optical channel signal by frequency discrimination without necessitating a complete demodulation of the optical channel signal. By comparison to existing demodulation schemes, the invention provides an all-optical low cost, high gain technique for recovering the overhead data which improves the payload signal-to-noise ratio and enhance performance.

In accordance with various aspects of the disclosure, a method, an apparatus and a system for characterizing and compensating for deterministic phase nonlinearities and distortion inherent in radio frequency and optical components utilized to synthesize a single sideband suppressed carrier optical waveform in the presence of random phase noise generated by an optical carrier source is disclosed. The method comprises mixing a modulated optical signal with a continuous wave optical signal in an optical coupler; optically heterodyning the mixed signal output from the optical coupler in a detector to produce a radio frequency waveform; and analyzing the produced radio frequency waveform in a processor based on a phase history of a preselected continuous wave signal to measure distortion characteristics of the radio frequency modulated optical signal.
