Systems and methods are presented for measuring power levels of primary and interfering signals as well as noise, particularly for satellite transmitted signals. A typical method comprises the steps of receiving a signal comprising a primary signal, an interference signal and noise, demodulating the primary signal to remove a carrier frequency, decoding the primary signal to obtain symbols, estimating a power level of the primary signal based upon the demodulated and decoded primary signal. Additionally, an ideal primary signal can be generated from the carrier power and frequency and the symbols and subtracted from the received signal to produce the noise and interference signal. The noise and interference power is then estimated from the noise and interference signal.

In a digital satellite television system in which a television receives its signal via a receiver/decoder, such as a set top box, interactive applications can be downloaded and run on the receiver/decoder. The application code is arranged as modules, and the downloading of modules is preceded by searching a directory module within a specified local address. The modules are signed and the directory module is signed and encrypted so that a single encryption applies to all of the modules making up the application. Multiple public encryption keys are stored in ROM in the receiver/decoder, so that applications can be created by different sources, without the sources needing to know each other's private encryption keys. A facility is provided to enable an encryption key to be temporarily stored in RAM in the receiver/decoder, so that a manufacturer of the receiver/decoder can check its functionality. A signature of the directory may be hidden at a variable position in a block of dummy data in the directory module. An application to be downloaded may be checked against an application validation bitmap stored in the receiver/decoder.

The invention groups a serie of methods and systems that simplify management and broadcasting of data encapsulated in the TCP/IP protocol (Internet Protocol) on digital data broadcasting using the MPEG-system protocol. By using standard methods to access data networks (Internet), digital audio-video networks and data networks using broadcast-oriented wideband means such as satellite, cable or terrestrial link (standards ETSI EN301192 and TR101202), the invention makes it possible to add the broadcast capacity of said services without prior agreement with or explicit control by the broadcast supplier or the existence of a return channel. The method requires: a) a traffic initiator or generator (A), which sets up conventional Internet connection to an Internet provider (B) that uses a broadcast-oriented system for satellite, cable or terrestrial data broadcasting so as to tend to the initiator the contents requested to a server that is adapted for said broadcast service (C), b) a server system (D) responding to the information request by the initiator; the server supplies the data to the gateway of the Internet provider (C), who then broadcast said data; c) a data extraction system (F) located on the receiver side (G), which extracts the content to be broadcast generated by the initiator, adapting the encapsulation to broadcast the contents using the UDP protocol for the Internet and MPEG-TS for audio-video.

A device for communicating with a mobile interactive satellite service system includes an antenna, a transceiver coupled to the antenna and operable to communicate with a mobile interactive satellite service system, a user input device, an output device, a processor unit, and a network interface. The processor unit is coupled to the user input device, the output device, and the transceiver such that the processor is operable to output received information from the transceiver using the output device, to receive interactive information from the user input device, and to transmit data based on the received interactive information using the transceiver. The network interface is coupled to the processor such that the processor is operable to side load information.
