In a cable return path system, a method for performing digital companding adds a predetermined offset to the digital value to be companded, and employs a modified µ-law or a-law companding technique to obtain a reduced bit length digital value. One embodiment of this modified approach adds a predetermined offset (e.g., 129 for a 12-bit implementation) to the digital value before companding and then employs a two-bit chord and a 5-bit step for the 12-bit implementation. The end result is that the performance metrics are not significantly compromised by this bit reduction when compared to current transmission methods without this technique.

A system and method for detecting fraud in a network is disclosed. The network includes cable modems, a network collector, cable modem termination systems (CMTS), and a network data converger. The network collector scans a first cable modem and receives and sends to the network data converger device identification for the first modem and an address of a first CMTS connected to the first cable modem. The network collector adds this information to a devices inventory. The network collector scans a second cable modem and receives and sends to the network data converger device identification and an address of a second CMTS connected to the second cable modem. The network data converger compares this information to the information in the devices inventory and may determine fraud based on the comparison.

A probe is configured to monitor one or more communication parameters on one or more downstream frequency channels carried on a communication medium of an access network. Results of repeated monitoring are stored over a predetermined period. At the conclusion of the monitoring period, data reports reflecting the stored results are transmitted in upstream frequency channels carried on the same medium. The probe can also be configured to send immediate messages if a parameter exceeds predefined limits and can store a plurality of monitoring programs and can be reprogrammed remotely. The probe can be contained within a cable tap if the medium is, e.g., a coaxial cable. Numerous probes can be deployed throughout an access network so as to provide monitoring data from each of many locations over a prolonged period.
