The invention relates to an arrangement and a method for measurement on a resonant oscillator with a mirror surface (8), which is displaced about an oscillation axis (2) with a period of duration (T), a laser diode (4) which emits a measuring beam (3) onto the first mirror surface (8), whereby a beam axis (21) of the measuring beam (3) intersects the oscillation axis (2). A photo receiver (6) is arranged opposing the first mirror surface (8) at a separation (a) from the beam axis (21) and a separation (b) from the mirror surface (8). The deflected measuring beam (5) moves within a quarter of a period (0 .... T/4) of an oscillation and over the photo-receiver (6) within a following quarter (T/4 .... T/2) of the period. The photo-receiver (6) is connected to an analytical circuit (11) which calculates the timepoints (t1, t2) from the impulses from the photo-receiver (6) and calculates a time period within the one half-wave (Δt = t2 - t1) from the above. The time duration Δt corresponds to a line dead time on writing sequential lines of a video image.

The write lines of a color laser printer are maintained substantially equal throughout the printer's operation by an electronic control arrangement. At the factory, the write lines on all photoconductors of the color laser printer are calibrated to be substantially equal, and the ratio of each write line to a measuring line for each photoconductor is ascertained. During operation of the printer, the length of each of the measuring lines is periodically determined through counting the number of PELslice clock timing pulses produced from a PELslice clock operating at a fixed frequency determined during factory calibration. The length of the write line is determined by the product of the length of the measuring line and the factory calibrated ratio of the length of the write line to the length of the measuring line. After each periodic determination, PELslice clock timing pulses are selectively inserted into or removed from the PELslice clock timing pulses for all of the write lines but the write line, which is closest to the desired length, to increase or decrease their lengths to be substantially equal to the write line, which is closest to the desired length. The time for insertion or removal of each of the PEL slices into the train of PELslice clock timing pulses produced by the PELslice clock is determined with each preferably inserted at a non-active portion of a PEL. Each insertion or removal of a PEL slice also may be offset from its determined position.

A rotating polygon scans the beam across the imaging member in line by line fashion while a modulator astride the beam path modulates the beam in accordance with image signals or pixels input thereto. A clock provides clock pulses for clocking the image pixels to the modulator. To assure uniform image size despite variations in the velocity of the imaging member, a control signal representative of imaging member velocity is used to control polygon velocity and maintain a predetermined velocity relationship between imaging member and polygon. Means are provided to servo clock frequency with polygon rotation, with a control to shift the clock servo midpoint frequency in response to changes in imaging member velocity.

The relationship between first and second side images is evaluated to determine how the position of the paper and/or the size and arrangement of an image can be manipulated to compensate for paper shrinkage caused by fusing. Show through is reduced by performing setup (S2000) to adjust a pixel clock frequency and/or a photoreceptor speed, determining a residual magnification error (S3000), determining margin shifts (S4000) to compensate for the residual magnification error, and applying the margin shifts (S5000). Paper shrink effects on registration can be compensated for using determinations made during a typical printer setup. Show through errors can be reduced without using a paper conditioner to pre-shrink or re-wet the paper. In simplex and duplex printing, the show through errors worsen as the image moves away from the registration edge. Using information obtained during setup, a margin shift is determined that results in a significant reduction in the maximum show through for each image.

A pixel clock generation unit of the optical scanning apparatus divides the scanning cycle into multiple division periods. A phase change of the pixel clock is carried out for each of the division periods. The phase change can also be different from scanning cycle to scanning cycle.
