Method and apparatus for scrambling a high definition television signal to discourage unauthorized recording of same. While recording per se is not prevented, the resulting recorded signal is rendered unusable due to an induced 'wobble' between the active video and the associated sync pulses. The scrambled television signal is readily viewable on a compliant high definition television set which descrambles the HDTV signal using an encoded indication of the amount of wobble accompanying the HDTV signal. Also provided is a special interface to prevent unauthorized persons from using the indication of the amount of wobble so as to defeat the scrambling. Also provided are method and apparatus for defeating the scrambling method and hence allowing recording of the scrambled video signal.

A video-scrambling system induces a random wobble i.e., time shifting, in the location of active portion of the video frame, without affecting the horizontal sync signal and colorburst in each video line, thus providing both security and concealment. The security is enhanced by filling in the gap between the nominal beginning of active video and the actual beginning of active video with a synthesized video signal which replicates the adjacent active video using a digitally generated filling pattern. Also, a random noise overlay further conceals the location of the gap. Additional concealment is provided by wiggling in time the location of the horizontal sync signal using one or two frequencies and also by randomly altering the location of the vertical sync signal. The NTSC digital encoding in accordance with the invention is simplified by using only two channels, chrominance and luminance, and by a heterodyne circuit for chrominance stability. NTSC encoding is enhanced by providing detail normally lost, by use of the chroma channel. Additionally, a non-standard video signal may be provided with a portion of the colorburst on the front porch of the horizontal blanking, thus allowing use of a relatively simple decoder.

A digital satellite broadcasting system for providing copy protection or so-called macrovision signals which hinder the recording of designated picture signals and which do not adversely affect the performance of a television receiver. Such satellite broadcasting system may include a broadcasting station (100), a satellite (200), and a plurality of satellite receivers (31) each located at a subscriber's premises and coupled to the subscriber's television receiver (60) and recording/reproducing device (VTR) (70). Parameters pertaining to a number of types of television receivers (60) may be transmitted from the satellite broadcasting station (100) by way of the satellite (200) to the satellite receivers (31). Upon receiving such transmitted parameters, each respective satellite receiver (31) obtains the parameters associated with the respective television (60). Such obtained parameters are utilized in forming a macrovision signal which is combined with video data and supplied to the respective television receiver (60). As a result of using parameters associated with the respective television receiver (60) in forming the macrovision signal, the performance of such television receiver (60) is not adversely affected and picture signals of designated programs which are recorded on the VTR (70) will produce unacceptable pictures upon reproduction so as to provide the desired copy protection.

A coded-signal decoding circuit in which, when a signal indicating a transition state from a synchronized state to an asynchronous state is outputted from a synchronous state register (8), data "0" generated by a "0" generating circuit (20) are stored in a data memory (10) instead of an output of an audio signal generating circuit (6), thus initializing the data memory (10) in advance. In a conventional coded-signal decoding circuit, when a transition was made from a synchronized state to an asynchronous state after failing to establish synchronization, the data memory (10) had to be initialized at a point in time before starting the next synchronous detection, presenting a problem in terms of time. The invention further provides a synchronous control method.

A technique for encrypting and decrypting information signals normally arranged as a succession of lines of active information, with each line having a line timing reference, such as color video information signals. The active video portion is time shifted with respect to the horizontal sync portion of the corresponding line using a predetermined slowly varying time shifting function. The time shifting information is conveyed to the decryption site by encoding the instantaneous value of the time shifting wave form for the beginning of each field in the vertical blanking portion of that field. To provide a reasonable maximum time shifting range, portions of the trailing edge of the active video in the preceding line and portions of the leading edge of the active video in the current line are discarded. During decryption, the original line timing and color burst signals are discarded and new signals are generated which are time displaced from the active videos portion by the original amount before encryption.

Time sequential information signals, such as color video signals having a line timing reference and an active video portion, are encrypted by time shifting the active video signal portion towards and away from the line timing reference signal in psuedo-random fashion prior to broadcasting or recording on tape or disk and transmittal to the user. The signals are decrypted by an inverse time shifting technique. By limiting the amount of time shifting between lines, potential signal degradation for color video signals is minimized, and drop out compensation processing is minimally affected, so that the color resolution and picture quality are substantially unaffected. Various levels of security are attainable, ranging from a simple security technique in which the intra field time shifting information is encoded along with the active video to a relatively sophisticated, high security level in which the number of decryption signal processing attempts and the time period within which decryption processing is permitted are limited.
