摘要: A network made up of sub-networks with associated nodes is automatically assessed to determine whether any local server (N5) should be moved from its existing sub-network (X3) to a different sub-network, a local server being a server which principally communicates with one particular sub-network. This assessment involves notionally locating the local server (N5) concerned on each sub-network (X1-X4) in turn and evaluating for each such location of the local server (N5), a predetermined optimal-location function that provides a measure of the traffic between sub-networks that would be associated with local server (N5) in its current notional location. The assessment further involves identifying as the optimum sub-network for the local server (N5), that sub-network (X4) for which evaluation of the optimum-location function indicates a minimum for traffic between sub-networks.

摘要: A network monitoring and diagnosis apparatus comprises a processor (500), data storage device (501, 504), graphical user interface (401), data mining means (505), data visualization means (506), data correlation means (507), and problem solving means. Performance data signals generated periodically by a communications network are collected by a network controller (400). The collected performance data is continuously mined, examining the data for performance parameters which are outside preset limits. Performance data outside preset limits is displayed on a graphical user interface, in a format determined by the visualization means. Performance parameters which are out of limits are correlated with other related parameters, information on which is available from the performance data signals, and patterns of parameter changes are identified by the correlation means. For performance parameters which are outside limits, a problem solving means (508) examines the out of limit performance data and generates suggested solutions to underlying problems resulting in out of limit performance parameters.

摘要: A test instrument for monitoring operation of ATM communication networks is capable of identifying individual cells passing through a node to which the instrument is connected as belonging to a particular virtual connection, and transmitting test cells replacing the identified cells, transmitting modified identified cells, or augmenting cells transmitted over the identified virtual connection with operations, administration, and maintainance cells. Specific test cells can be detected by a second test instrument connected to a node elsewhere in the network for accurately monitoring specific network operating characteristics. Cell delay, cell delay variation, cell error rates, and the like may all be monitored by the test instrument according to the invention.

摘要: Intelligent call forwarding is implemented through an intelligent network. The intelligent network includes a Service Switching Point (SSP), a Service Control Point (SCP), and a Service Management System (SMS). A call to a network subscriber is routed to the SSP which is used to detect Call Forwarding "triggers" - conditions which require the SSP to initiate selective Call Forwarding service. When a Call Forwarding trigger is detected the SSP passes the calling party's number to the SCP and requests call handling instructions from the SCP. The SCP provides the call handling instructions, as provisioned by the subscriber, to the SSP, and the SSP then forwards the call in accordance with the instructions. The SMS formulates and sends commands to the SCP for such purposes as changing the stored subscriber instructions or updating service features. By provisioning the SCP with appropriate instructions the forwarding destination for a call may be made to depend upon the time of day, day of the week, caller's identity, and/or status of the called telephone.

摘要: In order to monitor the status of a system in the form of a communications network, such as a computer local area network (LAN) 10 or an SS7 telecommunications signalling network, measurements are made of various operating parameters for each domain (S1...S14) or segment of the network. The measurements for each parameter are scaled in accordance with a respective piecewise-linear scaling function (300) for that parameter, so that all scaled measurements for all parameters have values in a range from 0 to 3, values of 1 and 2 corresponding to threshold values T₁ and T₂ of interest. An extreme scaled value, such as the maximum or minimum value, is selected for each parameter, and plotted on a respective one of multiple radially-extending axes (301-306), each of which is associated with a respective parameter. The plotted values are connected to form a polygonal figure (309).
