The present invention relates to a method for determination of the electrode tip position for consumable electrodes in electric smelting furnaces, which electrodes being submerged in the furnace charge. The voltage between two geometrically displaced points on the outside of the steel wall of the furnace pot is measured during operation of the furnace, said points being situated as close as possible to the electrode for which the electrode tip position is to be determined, and as far away as possible from the other electrodes in the furnace. The electrode current for the electrode for which the electrode tip position is to be determined, is recorded at the same time as the voltage between the two points are measured, whereafter the difference between measured voltage between the two points and measured electrode current is calculated, and where the absolute value of said difference increases when the electrode tip position increases and decreases when the absolute value of said difference decreases.

A device for controlling the gap between a melt electrode (62) and the surface of the molten mass (61) in a vacuum arc furnace. The device is based on the fact that the short-circuits generated between the melt electrode (62) and the surface of the molten mass (61) by the droplets of molten material give an indication about the electrode gap. The average drop frequency is approximately a linear function of the length of the arc, i.e. the drop rate is in hyperbolic relationship with the length of the arc. In order to obtain in these conditions a speedy control, a drop frequency controller (84) receives a signal which corresponds to the difference betweent he reciprocal value of a drop rate signal formed by a mean value generator (80) and a drop frequency set value.

This invention relates to an electrode column and a method of determining the length of the electrode in it in an active furnace. The column is a Söderberg column including a mantel in which the electrode is movable in an axial direction by lower and upper slipping clamps which are movable relatively to each other by slipping cylinders. The method includes the steps of moving, with the slip clamps, the electrode in a downslip relatively to the mantel by means of the slipping cylinders and gravity and measuring the force required to move the electrode by means only of the upper slipping clamp against predetermined reaction forces acting against movement of the electrode and computing these parameters to determine the mass and so the length of the electrode relatively to the theoretical mass of the undamaged electrode at the time of movement.

The invention relates to a method for the continuous determination of the distance between the electrode tip (12) and bath level (10) of the previous melt in an electric arc furnace so as to be able to exactly determine electric energy consumption per tonne of scrap actually melted, electrode wear and the residual liquid bath present in the electric arc furnace after tapping.

The present invention relates to a method for estimating the electrode tip position for submerged, consumable electrodes in electric smelting furnaces. The electrode tip position for an electrode is estimated based on the position of the electrode holder and a function for consumed electrode per unit of time. According to the invention it is established an upper and a lower uncertainty range for estimated electrode tip position, which upper and lower uncertainty ranges are increased during normal operation of the furnace and where the size of the upper and lower uncertainty ranges is updated by manual sounding of the electrode and/or by weighing of the electrode and/or by vertical movement of the electrode.
