A flow control valve (14) comprises a slidable valve member (18) and a variable orifice structure (20). The valve member slides in response to a pressure differential, created by fluid flow through the variable orifice structure, to bypass fluid in a positive-displacement pump (10). The variable orifice structure is a self-contained unit including a longitudinally movable pin (36) which has a variable cross- section and is disposed in an orifice aperture (30). The longitudinal position of the pin in the aperture controls the size of the orifice and therefore imposes a variable flow restriction which creates the pressure differential. The flow control valve is useful with power steering hydraulic pumps and systems where it is desirable to reduce the amount of hydraulic fluid which is delivered to the steering mechanism when the pump input speed exceeds a predetermined value.

A throttleable exhaust venturi (700) is described herein that generates strong suction pressures at an exhaust outlet (718) by accelerating an incoming ambient fluid stream with the aid of a venturi to high gas velocities and injecting a combustion exhaust stream into the ambient fluid stream at an effective venturi throat (728). A mixing element (544) downstream of the venturi throat ensures that the mixed fluid stream recovers from a negative static pressure up to local atmospheric pressure. A physical (724) and the effective (728) throat of the venturi (700) are designed to promote mixing and stabilize the ambient fluid flow to ensure that high velocity is achieved and the effective venturi is operable over a variety of combustion exhaust stream mass flow rates.

A first pressure chamber (15) is defined in the hole, with one end of the spool valve. A drain passage (19) is opened to the first pressure chamber and closable with the spool valve. A flow responsive pressure regulating unloader suitable for use between a positive displacement fluid pump and a fluid consuming device connected to the pump. The unloader includes a housing having an inlet port connected to an outlet port, and a by-pass port. A fluid pressure regulating valve is connected between the inlet port and the by-pass port to limit the maximum fluid pressure at the inlet port. A flow responsive valve also is connected between the inlet port and the by-pass port. Fluid flow from the inlet port to the outlet port creates a pressure drop across an orifice. The pressure differential is applied across a piston to close the flow responsive valve. When flow from the outlet ceases, the pressures across the piston become equal and the fluid pressure on the flow responsive valve opens the valve to divert fluid to the by-pass port.

In a power steering system which has a fluid pump and a hydraulic actuator, there is used a flow control device (100) which comprises a spool unit (50) slidably received in a spool receiving bore (5) in a manner to partition the bore into first (15) and second (16) pressure chambers. The spool unit (50) comprises a hollow cylindrical outer spool (52) slidably received in the spool receiving bore. The outer spool (52) has a bottom portion (52b) exposed to the second pressure chamber. The bottom portion has an aperture formed therethrough. A cylindrical inner spool (51) is incorporated with the outer spool. The inner spool includes a larger diameter portion (51a) slidably received in a major part of the outer spool and a smaller diameter portion slidably received in the aperture of the bottom portion (52b) of the outer spool. The inner spool is engaged with a control spring (17) to be biased toward the first pressure chamber. A spring member (61) is employed for biasing the outer and inner spools toward the second and first pressure chambers respectively.
