A hinge mechanism capable of realizing an increase in durability, an improvement in feeling, and a reduction in size and weight in cell phones and note type personal computers for which a further reduction in size and weight is requested. In the hinge mechanism, one of two sets of cams in which rotating cams (4) are engaged with fixed cams (5) only one time through the angle of 360°generates an energizing force at the start end of the rotating or opening/closing area of the hinge mechanism and the other set of cam generates an energizing force at the terminal end of the rotating or opening/closing area to generate the energizing forces at the start end and terminal end in any opening/closing area. By the hinge mechanism, the increase in durability, the improvement in feeling, and the reduction in size and weight can be realized.

The hinge cover has a pair of box-shaped cover members (7, 8), and a cross-section of each cover member taken in the direction orthogonal to the one end has an ellipse shape. The cover members are arranged so as to face to each other, covering and holding the hinge mechanism located between the projected corners of the transmitter and receiver cases. A fixing means for fixing the pair of the cover members to each other is provided at the one side of the pair of the cover members that are arranged faced to each other, and this one side is a side close to the one end of at least either the transmitter case or the receiver case. The second housing is stopped at least one time within the second interval while being rotated toward the first housing from an open position of the second housing with respect to the first housing. The portable terminal as described above is opened by the same opening operation as that of the general portable terminal, and is opened at an angle between approximately 90 and 120 degrees according to a user's necessity, thereby enabling the user to easily receive a multimedia service, such as a moving picture.

The hinge device has a reduced length and can occupy a smaller area in the portable terminal. Further, the hinge device allows the separate housing to be installed to the portable terminal while maintaining the shape of the portable terminal so that the separate housing slidably moves, thereby allowing increased design flexibility for the portable terminal. Furthermore, since the hinge device requires a small space in the portable terminal, the design specifications of the portable terminal may be easily changed.
