This invention provides an abrasive brush having strength and abrasive characteristics similar or superior to those of conventional brushes, and which allows a brush assembly having a desired width dimension and a desired brush surface hardness to be readily and easily assembled. A disk-shaped abrasive brush (1) includes a radial inner hub (5) and a radial outer brush section (3), preferably the hub (5) being integrally formed with the brush section (3). The hub (5) is provided with a flat part, a recessed part (9, 11), and a projecting part (7). When two adjacent abrasive brushes are aligned adjacent to each other, the flat, recessed and projecting parts of the abrasive brushes are engaged with each other and define a pitch between the abrasive brushes.

A method of removing iron oxide scale from processed sheet metal comprises the steps of: providing a surface conditioning apparatus (10); and conditioning a surface of the processed sheet metal (46) with the surface conditioning apparatus (10). In general, the iron oxide scale generally comprises three layers prior to surface conditioning: a wustite layer (88), a magnetite layer (90), and a hematite layer (92). The wustite layer is bonded to a base metal substrate of the processed sheet metal. The magnetite layer is bonded to the wustite layer, and the hematite layer is bonded to the magnetite layer. The surface conditioning apparatus (10) has at least one surface conditioning member (70). The step of conditioning the surface of the processed sheet metal includes bringing the at least one surface conditioning member into engagement with the surface of the sheet metal. The surface conditioning member is brought into engagement with the surface in a manner to remove substantially all of the hematite and magnetite layers from the surface, and in a manner to remove some but not all of the wustite layer from the surface, so that a portion of the wustite layer remains bonded to the base metal substrate of the processed sheet metal after surface conditioning.

Apparatus is disclosed for brushing the edges of electroplated metal strip to remove excess plating metal therefrom. In a first embodiment for brushing the narrow face edges of the strip, a cup brush is mounted on a carriage having a motor thereon for rotatably driving the brush (10). The carriage (24) is slidably movable in a transverse direction (44) of the strip. A device urges the carriage inwardly toward the strip so that the brush is maintained in constant contact with uniform pressure against the strip edge. In a second embodiment for brushing the broad surfaces of the strip adjacent to the strip edge, a disc brush is mounted on a carriage having a motor thereon for rotatably driving the brush. Again, the carriage is slidably movable in a transverse direction of the strip. A device urges the carriage inwardly toward the strip so that the brush is maintained in constant contact with a uniform portion of the width of the strip near the edge thereof. A second device is provided for maintaining the pressure exerted by the brush against the strip substantially constant. In a preferred form, a device is provided for removal and collection of plated metal particles brushed from the strip.

A descaling method for removing oxide scale from a hot-rolled stainless steel comprising the steps of: applying a solution of an alkaline earth metal chloride to the surface of the oxide scale layer formed on the hot-rolled stainless steel strip, and allowing the solution to penetrate into the oxide scale layer. In a subsequent annealing, the solution is heated and dehydrated to become solid matter and the dehydrated matter is melted and diffused into the oxide scale layer to soften the oxide scale layer. The oxide scale layer is then removed by a simple mechanical descaling by, for example, grinding brushes with or without a subsequent chemical descaling by a weak acid solution.
