The two lockable joints may be locked and unlocked using an actuator (11), a lever, which may act on compression means in order to render the lockable joints either mobile or locked. The compression means may cause a change in cross-sectional area of the tube over at least a part of its length. At least one of the lockable universal joints may provide for linear movement between the two relatively re-orientatable members. Also disclosed is an apparatus for the simultation of the orientation of a sample with respect to a cutting tool or scanning probe and method for aligning the adjustable device.

An apparatus (10) for installing rivets or other fasteners through a workpiece includes an automated machine (12) disposed on one side of the workpiece and a hand-held tool (14) that is manipulated by a single worker located on the opposite side of the workpiece. The automated machine (12) includes an end effector (24) supporting tools such as a drill and a riveter. The automated machine also includes a guide structure (16) adapted to be releasably affixed to the workpiece, and a carriage (22) that travels along the guide structure and supports the end effector so that the end effector can be positioned in various locations along the surface of the workpiece where fasteners are to be installed. The end effector includes an electromagnetic clamping device (26), and the hand-held tool includes a magnetic clamping block (30) that is attracted by the clamping device to clamp the workpiece therebetween. The end effector (24) generates a positioning signal and the hand-held tool includes a detector for detecting the positioning signal. The detector is operable to generate guidance information telling the person operating the hand-held tool where to move the hand-held tool so as to align the tool with the end effector of the automated machine. Once the hand-held tool is aligned with the end effector, the electromagnetic clamping device is activated to clamp the workpiece, and then the end effector tools are operated to drill a hole and to install a rivet or other fastener into the hole.

A connector assembly (12) with a connector body (24) molded directly about a captive ball (26) formed on a separate shaft (22), where the shaft (22) and connector (24) are attached to separate bodies which move relative to each other. This assembly retains an essentially zero clearance fit between the ball (26) and the connector (24) so as to prevent rattling between the parts from vibrations. This zero clearance fit is achieved at a much lower cost than comparable quality connectors due to higher diametric tolerances for the ball component (26). Higher diametric tolerances do not affect the final fit because the connector (24) is molded directly about the ball (26).
