The invention relates to a side milling cutter with cutting inserts (9), by which means a crank pin (2) can be cut with a single feed motion. The plate-shaped cutting inserts (9) are arranged on the periphery (7) of the inventive side milling cutter (1), alternating between the left and right side in a peripheral direction (8), and are oriented essentially radially with their cover surfaces (10) in relation to the cutter axis, said cover surfaces (10) containing the tool faces. The cutting inserts (9) are also arranged so as to form a gap (12) on the periphery (7) of the cutter (1) which is so narrow that the length of the arc of action (13) between the point of entry and the point of exit of cutting is greater than the half of the gap (14) of the arrangement of cutting inserts (9) on the periphery (7) of the cutter (1). Lower down the cutting insert (10), the peripheral flank surface (18) is shaped to provide transverse bearing surfaces (38) which have considerably lower pressure angles, i.e., resistance to turning moments, than would be provided by the inherent geometry of the cutting edge. Preferably, these transverse bearing surfaces (38) are formed by recessed features such as channels (40, 42), and most preferably, as chevron-type channels.
