A boring apparatus, such as a drilling apparatus for forming holes in pressurized pipes, comprises a cutting head (5) mounted to a distal end of a boring bar (2) which is itself connected to a feed screw (3) by a feed nut so that relative rotation between the boring bar (2) and the feed screw (3) cause the cutting head (5) and boring bar (2) to traverse axially along the feed screw (3) while the cutting head (5) is rotated for cutting. The apparatus has a main drive motor arranged to drive the cutting head (5), boring bar (2) and a main drive shaft (4). The main drive shaft (4) and the feed screw (3) are operably connected at the proximal end through a pair of adjacent coaxial planetary gear assemblie (6) whose planetary gear carriers are liked to rotate in unison about the axis. An independent, primary feed drive motor is geared to a planetary gear ring (20) and is operable to provide a difference in rotation velocities between the feed screw (3) and boring bar (2) whereby the movement of the cutting head (5) and boring bar (2) to and from along the axis may be controlled.

The method comprehends: (a) supporting a rotary driven spindle (34) of sufficient length to extend through the axial extent of the cavity (11) and reach the valve seat (13,14) the spindle (34) carrying a cutting tool (35) at its extremity, the support being a nonrotatable housing (32) effective to fit closely to the interior of the cavity (11) within a tolerance of 0.025 cm (.01 inches) and effective to move along the axis (12) of the cavity (11) to bring the cutting tool (35) into machining contact with the valve seats (13, 14); (b) securing a radially rigid but axially resilient diaphram (51) to the end of the housing (33), the diaphram (51) extending transversely across the interior of the cavity (11); (c) after inserting the housing and spindle into the cavity so that the cutting tool is proximate the valve seat but out of contact therewith, axially clamping a portion of the diaphram (51) remote from the spindle, against the axially clampable surface, and (d) moving the rotary driven spindle assembly (30) axially toward the valve seat (13,14) to conduct machining contact of the cutting tool (35) therewith, the axially resilient diaphram (51) providing accurate supporting alignment for the tool (35) under even high speed machining conditions.
