The invention relates to a slaughtering and/or stunning apparatus as well as a method for slaughtering and/or stunning a slaughter animal. The inventive apparatus (1) comprises a rotatably mounted receptacle (18) with a drive-in side that extends within a first end wall (20), a holding mechanism (54) which is movable or pivotable in an opposite second end wall (22), and first and second sidewalls (32). In order to be able to slaughter animals in both a traditional and a ritual fashion, the receptacle (18) can be rotated by at least 180° while an opening (40) for ejecting the slaughter animal can be closed by the first sidewall (34) or a section thereof, said first sidewall (32) or the section thereof being pivotable or rotatable about a first shaft (36) that extends along the longitudinal axis of the receptacle.

In continuation of the corridor section (10) a transfer section (16) is placed at the exit end of the section, which transfer section has room for a number of animals corresponding to the group size and has a connection with the entrance to the stunning apparatus. The transfer section between the corridor section and the stunning apparatus provides the advantage that the division process becomes less dependent on the subsequent process where a group of animals are driven into the stunning apparatus and stunned, which increases the capacity of the system.

A system for safely and humanely anesthetizing and/or euthanizing animals is provided. The system provides both manual and automated operation and may be scaled up to accommodate a large number of animals during a single procedure. The system includes a chamber 20 for receiving an animal to be anesthetized or euthanized and a supply of gas is provided for the chamber, and a fluid controller (66, 165, 265, 365) controls the flow of gas to the chamber. In one embodiment, a valve (75) controls the flow of exhaust air to the chamber.
