A combined vacuum cleaning tool comprises two mutually movable parts, such as a flat surface nozzle (12) and a brush nozzle (10) which are alternatively adjustable between working and non-working positions, the flat surface nozzle being resiliently actuated to occupy its working position. An adjusting mechanism comprises control means (15) rotatably supported by the brush nozzle and cooperating with a means (18,21) attached to the flat surface nozzle in order to move the brush nozzle into engagement with a working surface during a first phase and remove the flat surface nozzle from the working surface during a second phase. The adjusting mechanism comprises a contact surface (18a, 15f) having a curvature generally corresponding to the path of movement of the brush nozzle during said first phase, whereby during at least the major portion of this phase the adjustment takes place generally without rotational movement of the control means (15), and during said second phase said flat surface nozzle being removed from said working surface as a result f the rotational movement of said control means.

In preferred versions of the invention a third vacuum chamber (142) is provided at the nose (28) of the V-shaped housing (22) and selection means are provided to allow the vacuum fitting (143) to communicate with either 1/ the third vacuum chamber (142) or 2/ said third vacuum chamber (142) and said elongate vacuum chambers (46,48). Means are also disclosed to allow the vacuum cleaner attachment to be locked in either of these two modes, or to allow alternate selection of said two modes on movement of the attachment in a forward or rearward direction.

The joint (15) is disposed in an air flow passage (30), such as that of a vacuum cleaner power nozzle (10), and allows an element attached thereto, such as a vacuum cleaner hose to which it is connected, to be pivoted between first and second positions. The joint (15) includes a chamber (20) and a tubular member (22) having a first portion (23) pivotably disposed in the chamber and a second portion (24) protruding from the chamber (20). To prevent abrasion of the joint (15) caused by the accumulation of abrasive particles, the inner walls of the chamber are provided with grooves (34,35, 36) where any dust which penetrates the joint (15) can collect. The grooves (34, 35, 36) are positioned so that they are cleaned periodically by the flow of air in the passage (30).

The sleeve member (3) is by a resilient member (4) held in a first position, suction position, in which it covers side passages (5.6;15) to the suction conduit (1) and in which suction is performed through the suction opening (2). If the pressure difference immediately inside and outside the suction opening (2) exceeds a certain value, e.g. if the suction opening is stopped up, the sleeve member (3) is against the action of the resilient member (4) automatically displaced to a second position in which said side passages (5,6;15) to the suction conduit are opened, thereby reducing the suction force in the suction opening (2).

A liquid aspirator which may be connected to a conventional vacuum cleaner has two separate body parts. The rear body part is provided with an extended tube into which can be inserted a hose from a conventional vacuum cleaner. Also the rear body part holds a cartridge which contains a filter and a filter support where liquid is filtered. The front body part acts as the liquid reservoir and is provided with a tube connected to the front nozzle of the front body part. The tube extends along the top of the front body part and protrudes through the filter cartridge to the back of the rear body part. The liquid aspirated by suction of the vacuum cleaner is discharged to the rear of the assembled unit. The filter cartridge slows down air and water speed and distributes liquid to the front liquid reservoir.

An attachment for a vacuum cleaner comprises a suction head having a tubular portion (1) for connection to a vacuum cleaner pipe and a flared skirt (2) formed with a downwardly depending substantially rectangular flange (3). The flared skirt (2) defines a plurality of channels (5) each of which communicates with a respective opening (6) of the flange. Each channel (4) may be brought into or out of communication with the tubular portion (1) by moving a respective closure member or stopper (7) out of or into the channel. In an alternative embodiment the tubular portion is rotatably received in a socket of the skirt and is formed with a suction inlet which may be brought into communication with a selected one of the channels by rotating the tubular portion to an appropriate angular position.
