An ultrasound therapy system comprises an annular array ultrasound transducer (13), a mechanical driver (15), a transmitter/receiver (16, 17), and a controller (18, 19). The controller (18, 19) includes a imaging controller (18, 19), a heating controller (19), and a select controller (19). The mechanical driver (15) mechanically drives the transducer (13) to change at least one of the position and direction of ultrasound beams transmitted and received by the transducer (13). The transmitter/receiver (16, 17) may supply drive signals to the respective elements of the transducer (13), and receive the ultrasound echo signals from the elements (13a - 13d). The imaging controller (18, 19) gives a first drive command to the transmitter/receiver (16, 17), and at the same time drives the mechanical driver (15), radiates scanning ultrasound beams for tomographing through the transducer (13), and obtains a tomogram of a target portion in a patient from the echo signal derived from the transmitter/receiver (16, 17). The heating controller (19) drives the transmitter/receiver (16,17) by a second drive signal to cause the transducer (13) to radiate heating ultrasound beams. The heating ultrasound beams heats the target. These imaging and heating controllers (18, 19) are selectively activated by the select controller (19).

A heat-exchanging head piece comprises a head-encircling, variably-constrictable, heat-exchanging headband portion (30), a top head-overlying, contacting and heat-exchanging crown portion (36) which is adjustably connectible between front and rear portions of the headband in fitting manner; and means for integrating and compacting the entire assembly of heat-exchanging headband portion (30) (also constricting) and heat-exchanging crown portion (36) so that the entire scalp zone is somewhat under pressure and compression with greatest constriction at the headband zone and continuous, no holiday, heat-exchanging contact overthe patient's entire scalp. In a word, absolute maximal heat exchange is provided, with carefully controllable compression and constriction not only over the entire scalp zone but, most particularly, in the critical headband zone where base circulation to the scalp originates and exits. Thus safety and comfort are maintained to the maximum degree yet efficiency is not in any way sacrificed. Other applications (without limitation) include the cooling of the head in case of certain types of trauma to inhibit bleeding after initial treatment of injury, cold andior heat application to the entire upper head zone in the case of headache or migraine, use in preparation for neurosurgery and the like. The pressure construction option in the headband may be employed or not as required. With or without the later, complete, uniform upper entire head heat exchange may be obtained by use of the heat-exchanging head piece in accordance with the present invention.

An apparatus and method are provided for the selective, locally defined heating of an object, particularly a human body to destroy malignant cells of the body. A ring has a plurality of high frequency antennas or the like mounted on the inner surface thereof, capable of focusing together at a common volume. The transmitters may be mounted for limited pivotal movement, and for radial movement, with respect to the ring to provide flexibility in focusing. The ring is preferably disposed generally vertically, and is mounted so that it is rotatable about its center, and pivotal about two perpendicular axes disposed in the plane of the ring, and is mounted for reciprocal movement in a dimension perpendicular to the plane of the ring. A human body is disposed within the ring and energy is supplied to the transmitters to focus on the malignant cells of the human body, and destroy them. Various structures for enhancing the focusing effect may be provided.

An electrically heatable article containing a layer of wax and adapted to conform to the shape of a body surface, when the wax is melted, for thereafter treating the body surface with the heat of fusion of the wax. In an article, such as a head treatment cap, the wax is contained in a layer of modules arranged near the scalp side of the cap, a resistance heating element is provided for initially heating the wax to its melting point, and insulation is provided for preventing heat loss through the outside of the cap.
