A locking bolt (14) prevents the seat from moving forwardly, and hence being released, once the seat back (5) is erect. The wheelchair forms part of a system in which one seat (2) can fit two or more different types of carriage (3) having alternative propulsion mechanisms or being equipped for attendant-propulsion or occupant-propulsion.

A stair-climbing wheelchair having a sensor (60) at the front end thereof for sensing the presence of a stair step (86) or an inclined ramp. The sensor (60) emits signals (66) which reflect from a surface (96) and to a receptor (68) in the sensor (60), the receptor (68) being coupled to a microprocessor (70) which determines not only the linear distance traveled by the wheelchair in a forward direction, but also the height of the stair step (86). Thus, when the tracks (25) are down, a microprocessor (70) associated with the sensor (60) will shut off the drive motors (19, 30) to the tracks (25) if the slope of the stairway is too great when the tracks (25) are down. In such a case, the wheelchair backs away from the stairway and does not go down it. If the slope is less than a predetermined value, such as 30-35°, the wheelchair can move down the stairway in the normal fashion.

A wheelchair locator is proposed for use mainly in vehicles which are designed for able-bodied passengers but are capable of being adapted to carry a wheelchair passenger who remains in his wheelchair. An inertia reel (9) controls a retractable flexible safety belt (10) which has attachments (12) to secure it releasably to the frame of the wheelchair. The occupant of the wheelchair pulls the belt against the retracting force and attaches it to convenient spaced points on the chair; then when the belt pulls the chair securely against a supporting surface the reel is locked and the chair is held in place. In a taxi the locking and unlocking of the reel may be controlled by the driver.

The invention relates to an apparatus for lifting a wheel-chair into and out from a vehicle, having a lifting arm which may be connected to the wheel-chair. According to the invention the apparatus comprises a substantially Z-shaped stand (4) having a lower support and mounting plate (5) intended to be attached to the vehicle floor at the place for the driver's seat by means of a number, suitably three, of bolts (6), and a substantially vertical middle portion (7) and an upper support plate (8) intended to be positioned on top of the back seat of the vehicle, a lifting mechanism (25-45) and a swinging equipment (36-45) for the lifting arm (3) whereby the lifting arm (3) and the lifting mechanism (25-34) and the swinging equipment (36-45) are carried by the upper support plate (8) of the stand (4). The invention also relates to a collapsible wheel-chair especially adapted for use together with the lifting apparatus.
